<\/p>\nThe Gay Man Who Outed a Transgender Contestant on \u2018Survivor\u2019 Has Been Fired from His Job<\/b><\/p>\n

Jeff Varner, the gay<\/a> Survivor: Game Changers<\/em> contestant who outed fellow contestant Zeke Smith as transgender<\/a> at this week\u2019s Tribal Council, has been fired from his job as a result of the fallout from the show.<\/p>\n The Greensboro News & Record<\/em> reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n Varner spent Thursday on often-emotional interviews with national news media, including ETonline and People magazine. He said he also faced another fallout: He was fired Thursday from his job as a real estate agent.<\/p>\n He said he was told that he is \u201cin the middle of a news story that we don\u2019t want anything to do with.\u201d Efforts to reach his employer for comment were unsuccessful Thursday.<\/p>\n This season of \u201cSurvivor\u201d had been filmed 10 months ago in the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji. But Varner couldn\u2019t talk publicly about the episode until it aired.<\/p>\n CBS released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter standing by its decision to broadcast the episode<\/a>:<\/p>\n \u201cAfter the tribal council scene in last night\u2019s Survivor <\/em>was filmed, we consulted with Zeke Smith and with GLAAD in advance of the broadcast, including the issue of how Zeke would tell his story after the episode aired. This is his second consecutive season on Survivor. <\/em>From his first season through the current edition, we have always been guided by the principle that this is his story to tell, and it remains so. We support how [host] Jeff Probst and the producers handled a very sensitive situation and marvel at the grace Zeke exhibited under extraordinary circumstances. We have also respect for how Jeff Varner has expressed remorse for his mistake, both in the episode and in his subsequent dialogue with the media. In the end, we believe this episode, accompanied by Zeke\u2019s own remarkable writing and speaking on the subject, has provided an unexpected but important dialogue about acceptance and treating transgender people with respect.\u201d<\/p>\n Smith told Julie Chen on The Talk<\/em> that he had \u201cunprecedented autonomy\u201d in telling his story <\/a>(as transcribed by Jezebel):<\/p>\n \u201cI love Survivor<\/em> and I was drawn to apply to Survivor<\/em> because of the integrity in the storytelling. And when I first applied, I didn\u2019t tell casting that I was trans<\/a>. That was developed later in our relationship. And I had a chat<\/a> with Jeff Probst in which we agreed if, how, and when I\u2019m gonna talk about this part of my life\u2014it\u2019s gonna be up to me, as opposed to being outed by a fellow contestant being the exception.<\/p>\n \u201cBut in the aftermath of being outed, I\u2019ve been granted unprecedented autonomy in how I wanted to tell my story. We started having conversations all the way back in Fiji nine months ago about the care with which this episode was going to be handled. I came to Jeff and asked if I could write a personal essay about what happened and he immediately said yes. And I was really proud of how I responded. And I wanted the world to see how much I\u2019d grown and I also thought by showing what happened, maybe it wouldn\u2019t happen to someone else and something good could come of it.\u201d<\/p>\n GLAAD had worked with Smith and CBS \u201cfor several months\u201d <\/a>leading up to the airing of the episode.<\/p>\n Said\u00a0GLAAD\u2019s Transgender Media Program director Nick Adams:<\/p>\n \u201cZeke Smith, and transgender people like him, are not deceiving anyone by being their authentic selves, and it is dangerous and unacceptable to out a transgender person. It is heartening, however, to see the strong support for Zeke from the other people in his tribe.
