Designs for Trump\u2019s Border Wall are Here. They Fall into 4 Categories.<\/b><\/p>\n

Imagine the Great Wall of China along the banks of the Rio Grande. Or maybe an animal-friendly barrier that keeps migrants out but lets roadrunners in.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

These are some of the designs contractors submitted this week in the first round of bids to build President Donald Trump\u2019s promised\u00a02,000-mile wall along the Mexican border.<\/p>\n

Chicago Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin took a look at some of the designs and has divided them into four categories.<\/p>\n

Category 1: Perfuming the Pig<\/h3>\n

\u201cSome of these are what I would call<\/a> the \u2018perfuming the pig\u2019 border wall designs,\u201d Kamin says. In other words, designs that distract from the intent of the wall \u2014 which is to keep people out.<\/p>\n

First up in this category is the solar panel design<\/strong> from Gleason Partners LLC.<\/p>\n

This wall would generate 2 megawatts of electricity an hour. The contractors say the power could be sold to Mexico or to utility companies, and the profits could fund construction of the wall.<\/p>\n

Another example in this category is an\u00a0animal-friendly wall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Black Security Products wants to build the wall with a 4-inch slit along the bottom to\u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t know, let little desert rats pass through,\u201d laughs Kamin.<\/p>\n

Category 2: Bad Neighbor<\/h3>\n

The second category, Kamin says, is the \u201cbad neighbor designs.\u201d These project the message:\u00a0\u201cAttempt to climb me and die!!\u201d<\/p>\n

Take, for instance, the nuclear waste wall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Clayton Industries wants to build a wall with a series of barriers to deter illegal border crossers. There\u2019s a chain-link\u00a0fence, sensor panels, a railroad, a 30-foot-high wall and then \u2026 wait for it \u2026 a 100-foot-deep trench with nuclear waste at the bottom.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt essentially sends the message:\u00a0\u2018Hey immigrants from Mexico and Central America. If you want to try to take a risk and find a better life in the United States, take your kid through a nuclear waste dump.\u2019 That\u2019s what we\u2019re talking about,\u201d says Kamin.<\/p>\n

Category 3: The Fortress<\/h3>\n

\u201cThe fortress design is quite straightforward,\u201d says Kamin. And there\u2019s no better example of this than the Great Wall of China rip-off<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Crisis Resolution Security Services design might look familiar. It has a castellated top, a pedestrian walkway, and supposedly it could double as a tourist attraction.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure that the Chinese president in his discussions with Trump<\/a>\u00a0is going to be horrified by this,\u201d jokes Kamin. \u201cHe\u2019ll probably ask for royalties or something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Category 4: Can\u2019t We All Just Get Along?<\/h3>\n

The \u201ccan\u2019t we all just get along\u201d\u00a0designs\u00a0are \u201cmore whimsical\u201d says Kamin.\u00a0These designs are intended more as cultural commentary than an actual plan.<\/p>\n

Case-in-point: JM\u00a0Design Studio\u2019s hammock and pipe organ walls<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

One sketch from this group of women<\/a> artists\u00a0shows 3 million hammocks strung across the border, suspended between 30-foot-tall trees.\u00a0Another design has a wall of 10 million pipe organs, with openings every 20 feet allowing for people to pass through.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think the Department of Homeland Security is going to go for that one,\u201d\u00a0Kamin says.<\/p>\n

The next step is for the government to select finalists. They will be announced in June. About 10 companies will be chosen to build prototypes of their designs in San Diego.<\/p>\n
