This falls way beyond\u00a0\u2018schadenfreude\u2019 to land squarely in\u00a0\u2018depressing.\u2019\n<\/p>\n

An Indiana woman<\/a> who proudly voted for Trump says she\u2019s fighting to save her husband and the father of her children from\u00a0being deported.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

Helen Beristain says she thought \u201cgood people\u201d would get to stay in Trump\u2019s America, and only the \u201cbad\u201d ones would be deported.\n<\/p>\n

\u201c[Trump] did say the good people would not be deported. The good people would be checked,\u201d she tells her local news station<\/a>. \u201cThis is why I voted for Mr. Trump.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Now she\u2019s confused. She doesn\u2019t understand why her husband of 20 years, Roberto, is being sent back to Mexico. Not just that, but he may be deported as early as\u2026\u00a0today.<\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI told them\u00a0that\u2019s a joke,\u201d Helen says, \u201cand they said, \u2018No, that\u2019s true.\u2019\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Roberto first came to the U.S. illegally in 1998. It was during that trip that he met his wife and the two began a family.\n<\/p>\n

In 2000, they were visiting Niagara Falls when they accidentally crossed the Canadian border.\u00a0When U.S. immigration agents discovered Robert0\u00a0was undocumented, they told him he had to leave the country.\n<\/p>\n

Since Helen was pregnant at the time, Roberto managed to work out a deal to\u00a0stay, and for the past 17 years he has maintained a work permit, paid taxes, acquired a Social Security card and driver\u2019s license, and been checking in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials\u00a0each year.\n<\/p>\n

He\u2019s currently waiting for his green card.\n<\/p>\n

During his annual check-in ICE this year, Roberto was\u00a0unexpectedly detained. He\u2019s currently being held at a detention center in Wisconsin awaiting deportation.\n<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cHe\u2019s trying to hold up,\u201d Helen says. \u201cHe said, \u2018I haven\u2019t done anything wrong, I haven\u2019t committed a crime. The only crime I\u2019ve done is wanting to be in the United States.\u2019\u201d\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

If Roberto is deported, he could be barred from reentering the\u00a0country for up to a decade. In the meantime, Helen says she\u2019s trying to\u00a0look at the bright side.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, it\u2019s going to be a long vacation in Riviera Maya,\u201d she jokes. \u201cNever been there! I\u2019ve never been to Mexico! Maybe I get to be! To get to beautiful places like go to Cancun or do fun things, right?\u201d\n<\/p>\n
