Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch frustrated Senator Al Franken this afternoon when Franken asked him about his views on marriage equality.<\/p>\n
Franken brought up Gorsuch\u2019s close friend Ken Mehlman, who as RNC Chairman in 2004\u00a0was a vocal opponent of same-sex<\/a> marriage and worked to pass bans on it (and succeeded) in 11\u00a0states. Franken noted that Mehlman has since come out as gay<\/a> and become an advocate for marriage equality.<\/p>\n Franken asked Gorsuch if his views on same-sex<\/a> marriage have changed \u201cif at all\u201d since the 2004 election.<\/p>\n Gorsuch said that it\u2019s \u201cabsolutely settled law\u201d but\u00a0added \u201cthere is ongoing litigation about its impact and its application right now\u201d and said he could not share his personal views.<\/p>\n As on many other topics, Gorsuch mostly stonewalled until Franken got frustrated and moved on.<\/p>\n Watch:<\/p>\n Judge Gorsuch refuses to give his personal opinion on marriage equality, but tells @alfranken<\/a> it is “absolutely settled law” pic.twitter.com\/jhIwpXarFd<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 David Mack (@davidmackau) March 21, 2017<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Earlier, Gorsuch was asked by Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) about the anti-gay<\/a> views of his mentor at Oxford.<\/p>\n Gorsuch said one only need to look at his record to see his views.<\/p>\n Asked Durbin:\u00a0\u201cWhat about LGBTQ individuals?\u201d<\/p>\n Gorsuch snapped back: \u201cWhat about them? They\u2019re people.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSenator, I\u2019ve tried to treat each case and each person as a person, Gorsuch added, angrily, \u201cnot a \u2018this kind of person,\u2019 not a \u2018that kind of person\u2019 \u2014 a person. Equal justice under law.
