Do gay<\/a> men<\/a> have a misogyny problem?<\/b><\/p>\n

Most people would agree that homophobia sucks. So does misogyny. So why do so many guy<\/a> guys<\/a> who have experienced discrimination\u00a0in their own lives still\u00a0say and do demeaning things toward women<\/a>?\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

Way back in 2014, Rose McGowan took a lot of heat<\/a> for saying, \u201cGay men<\/a> are as misogynistic as straight men<\/a>, if not more so.\u201d McGowan later apologized for the comment, saying she shouldn\u2019t have\u00a0made such a sweeping generalization. But her sentiment really wasn\u2019t too far off.\n<\/p>\n

In an\u00a0op-ed titled\u00a0Sorry, Gay Guys, I\u2019m Not Here For Your Casual Misogyny<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>published by NewNowNext<\/em> last week, writer Nico Lang says misogyny among gay<\/a> men<\/a> is still alive and well.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all know someone who loudly proclaims how grossed out he is by vaginas,\u201d Lang writes. \u201cThen there are the guys<\/a> who think its fine to drunkenly toggle a woman<\/a>\u2019s breasts in a bar because he\u2019s not attracted to her.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Now, in an op-ed published by Elite Daily<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>writer Sean Abrams says he\u2019s\u00a0totally done with being labeled as a\u00a0\u201cgay<\/a> best friend,\u201d and he\u2019s directing his frustrations about it at women<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019ve ever heard those three words, odds are, you\u2019ll assume we\u2019re\u00a0someone who is overtly sassy, will talk sex<\/a> tips with no judgment and can tell you when your ass<\/a> looks fat without you getting offended,\u201d Abrams\u00a0writes with just the slightest\u00a0trace of misogyny.\n<\/p>\n

He continues, \u201c\u2018GBFs\u2019 are all the rage, it seems. It\u2019s cool for girls<\/a> to be unique and\u2013outside their regular circle of gal pals\u2013have that one guy<\/a> whom they can hang around without the fear of that person always\u00a0trying to get in their pants.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

By \u201cgirls<\/a>\u201d and \u201cgals\u201d we assume he means women<\/a><\/em>, not\u00a0female<\/a> children.\n<\/p>\n

Abrams says the media is at least partially to blame for the whole GBF phenomenon, thanks to movies like 1995\u2019s \u201cClueless,\u201d 2004\u2019s \u201cMean Girls,\u201d and 2010\u2019s \u201cEasy A.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u201cApparently, we like to get things riled up, bringing around excitement in the form of some quality catfights,\u201d he writes. \u201cBut that\u2019s too bad, considering\u00a0I f*cking hate getting myself caught up in the middle of stupid drama.\u00a0I have no time for that, and I\u2019m around for way more than to be at your beck and call<\/a>.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Being labeled as a GBF may seem like fun at first, Abrams continues, \u201cbut when it continues to be a repetitive trope that\u00a0misuses our sexuality\u00a0to pigeonhole gays<\/a> into a sole role as the sassy, advice-giving influencer in your friend group, then there\u2019s nothing to be applauded.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

We would add that pigeonholing women<\/a> into a role of needy, emotional\u00a0basket cases in constant need of reassurance and affection shouldn\u2019t be applauded either.\n<\/p>\n

The whole thing, Abrams says, is \u201cdehumanizing.\u201d Especially because he is \u201cas far from\u00a0effeminate as you can get when it comes to my mannerisms.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Going back to Nico Lang\u2019s article, Lang says\u00a0attitudes like this are not helpful.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cMisogyny hurts gay<\/a> men<\/a>, too,\u201d he writes. \u201cBecause misogyny is at the root of homophobia.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

He explains:\n<\/p>\n

Gay men<\/a> are stereotyped as feminine because we have sex<\/a> with men<\/a>, and society has a negative association with femininity. It\u2019s an insult to walk, throw, or talk like a girl<\/a>. When a gay<\/a> man<\/a> is beaten up, or taunted as a \u201cfaggot,\u201d it\u2019s because he\u2019s viewed as being like a woman<\/a>. Which is the worst thing a man<\/a> can be. (Just look at all the \u201cno femme\u201d profiles on Grindr.) <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So where do we go from here?\n<\/p>\n

Lang says gay<\/a> men<\/a> can\u00a0start by being a little more open-minded.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can all benefit from a little education,\u201d he writes, \u201cand instead of brushing off accusations of sexism or, worse, gaslighting our female<\/a> friends, we should just listen. But if gay<\/a> men<\/a> don\u2019t evolve past their own misogyny, it\u2019s not because our sexuality gives us a pass. It\u2019s because we refuse to learn.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
