Labels. People can\u2019t seem to stop talking about them these days. Including opinion writer Edward Pike.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

In a new op-ed titled\u00a0Gay men won\u2019t be truly free until we learn to ditch labels like masc and femme<\/em><\/a>, Pike argues that if we truly want to live<\/a> in a post-label world where everyone is equal, we need to start by\u00a0doing away with the labels we impose upon ourselves.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cHow many gay<\/a> men<\/a> like me have spent countless hours worrying about the tone of our voices, the sway of our hips, the limpness of our wrists, lying in fear of being discovered for the \u2018girl<\/a>\u2019 within us that we\u2019ve been so desperately trying to suppress?\u201d he asks.\n<\/p>\n

This way of thinking, Pike says, isn\u2019t healthy, as it causes people to \u201c[mask] their authenticity, their voice or their true desires.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been convinced that the right body, job or clothes would provide the decoy we needed so that others would never truly see us,\u201d he writes. \u201cEveryone has been living the same shared dream, in the silent and unspoken agreement that what is on the surface is what is true.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Hmmm.<\/em> We\u2019re not sure about \u201ceveryone,\u201d but we get what he\u2019s saying. Many LGBTQ people, indeed, still feel pressured to keep their identities secret.\n<\/p>\n

So what\u2019s the remedy?\n<\/p>\n

According to Pike, we need an all out \u201crevolution.\u201d We need to stop labeling ourselves and one another in\u00a0antiquated terms like \u201cmasc\u201d and \u201cfemme\u201d and instead embrace total inclusivity.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThis revolution must start first within ourselves,\u201d he says. \u201cWithout self-introspection it has no meaning and is merely a band-aid.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to pause and consciously ask ourselves questions such as \u2018What do I believe to be true about masculinity?\u2019, or \u2018How do I define femininity?\u2019.\u00a0 It might take a little digging: these old images are deeply ingrained in our unconscious.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

He concludes by writing:\n<\/p>\n

\n

If we are ever going to let go of the need for letters and acronyms for our identity, we need to learn to move beyond our labels first. Because only when we can let go of our own unconscious bias, of our dualistic minds, of our age-old stories of what is right or wrong, good or bad, masculine or feminine\u2013can we truly find the freedom we\u2019ve been craving. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
