Who doesn\u2019t love a good sports metaphor?\n<\/p>\n

This one comes from an unlikely place \u2014 a high school wrestling mat \u2014 and it\u2019s as inspiring as it is remarkable.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

Jesse Loera came out to his friends and family when he was in the eighth grade, and that made life on his wrestling team a constant challenge.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of my teammates in high school would \u2018joke\u2019 around about me being gay<\/a>,\u201d he writes in a first-person post on\u00a0Outsports<\/a>.<\/em>\n<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cAt first I told myself \u2018they\u2019re just playing, it\u2019s all good, boys<\/a> will be boys<\/a>.\u2019 They would tell me that as well.\n<\/p>\n

But it didn\u2019t stop. They kept at it. I did tell some of them to knock it off, but they never did. It hurt. I dreaded going to practice. I hated going into the room and having to experience that same torment every day. I hated it.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

That\u2019s enough to drive any reasonable person away from a sport, and while Jesse did consider walking away from wrestling, his parents encouraged him to stick with it.\n<\/p>\n

His family moved ahead of his junior year, and a new school meant a whole new coming out process. Luckily the wrestling coach at his\u00a0new school, a \u201cbig, muscular guy<\/a>\u201d who at first intimidated Jesse, convinced him to come to a few practices.\n<\/p>\n

There he met a new group of peers who didn\u2019t seem to care one way or the other about him being gay<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI asked one of them what he thought when he first found out I was gay<\/a>,\u201d Jesse remembers.\n<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019It didn\u2019t make no difference to me,\u2019 he said. \u2018I didn\u2019t look at you any differently after you told us.\u2019 I was speechless.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

But not everyone was so immediately understanding, and that\u2019s where the real kicker comes in.\n<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWhat really made me feel accepted was when we were at a dual meet, and the guy<\/a> I was going to wrestle said something about me being gay<\/a>. One of my good friends gave me the best advice.\n<\/p>\n

\u2018Don\u2019t get mad,\u2019 he said, \u2018calm down and take it out on the mat.\u2019\n<\/p>\n

That was what made me realize I was truly accepted.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Not to mix our metaphors too much, but that\u2019s some home run advice we can really get behind.<\/p>\n
