Ivanka Trump\u2019s lifestyle brand may be doomed, global retail expert says<\/b><\/p>\n

If Ivanka Trump thought becoming first daughter\u00a0was going to help elevate her lifestyle brand, she can think again. Not only are her sales in the toilet<\/a>, but at least one brand expert doesn\u2019t seem to have a lot of faith in its future.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

Carol\u00a0Spieckerman is a global retail expert. She says Ivanka\u2019s brand is in trouble because her target customers are women<\/a>, and many women<\/a>\u00a0find Donald Trump\u2019s comments about them pretty abhorrent.\u00a0The most recent\u00a0Quinnipiac poll found Trump\u00a0has a paltry 36% approval rating among women<\/a>. (His approval rating among men<\/a> is only slightly higher, at 41%.)\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThe lifestyle branding premise behind Ivanka\u2019s label\u00a0is in jeopardy,\u201d Spieckerman tells the Telegraph<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThe women<\/a>\u2019s marches put the stake in the ground but arguably were survivable. Ongoing controversies surrounding her father\u2019s actions will continue to impact Ivanka\u2019s brand, though.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

But even for those who aren\u2019t turned off by Ivanka\u2019s dad\u2019s behavior, or Ivanka\u2019s\u00a0complacency with it,\u00a0Spieckerman says the first daughter is doing other things\u00a0to confuse her customers. Specifically, she hijacked its official Instagram page.\n<\/p>\n

Rather than building her own Instagram following, Ivanka simply took her\u00a0brand\u2019s page, which\u00a0had an impressive 3.2\u00a0million followers, accumulated over several years, and turned it into her own personal page. That\u00a0means anyone who followed the\u00a0brand\u00a0to see what new items the line was promoting\u00a0are now confronted with random\u00a0pictures of Ivanka\u2019s dad, kids, and the goings-on inside the White House. Meanwhile, the Ivanka\u00a0brand had to start back\u00a0from scratch with an entirely new Instagram page.\n<\/p>\n

Then, of course, there are unhelpful aggressive tweets like this from her father:\n<\/p>\n

The tweet drew unwanted attention<\/a> to the brand as it\u00a0forced Nordstrom to respond by saying the reason it was dropping Ivanka was because nobody was buying her stuff\u00a0anymore. Shortly after that,\u00a0the\u00a0Wall Street Journal\u00a0<\/em>came out with a report\u00a0that sales were down an alarming 70%.\n<\/p>\n

The situation was further aggravated when\u00a0Kellyanne Conway\u00a0violated\u00a0government ethics<\/a> rules by urging TV viewers to \u201cGo buy Ivanka\u2019s stuff,\u201d resulting in even more negative attention, and causing other retailers to jump of the #DumpIvanka bandwagon<\/a>, including Neiman Marcus, Gilt, ShopStyle, Sears, Kmart, and the Home Shopping Network.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThese controversial endorsements from polarizing figures like Kellyanne Conway, and the tweets from her father about her brand, undoubtedly have caused more damage [than good],\u201d Spieckerman\u00a0explains. \u201cIvanka may have technically distanced herself from the brand but the optics around her ongoing connection to her father, to include pictures of her in various parts of the White House, reinforce the link and in the end, the brand backlash.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

So what happens next?\n<\/p>\n

\u201cIvanka could attempt to take her brand in another direction after Donald Trump leaves office,\u201d Spieckerman says, hesitantly, \u201cbut she will have many headwinds to fight until that happens.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

The question is, can she even withstand those headwinds? Or will her brand\u00a0meet the same fate as so many of her father\u2019s failed business ventures?<\/p>\n
