It\u2019s time to stop joking and start taking asexuality seriously<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A 2016\u00a0review published by the University of British Columbia confirms that asexuality isn\u2019t some bizarre form of \u201cpsychopathology\u201d or the result an extremely low libido as famously diagnosed\u00a0by\u00a0zoologist and sex<\/a> researcher Alfred Kinsey.\u00a0Instead, researchers say, \u201cavailable evidence points to asexuality being best conceptualized as a unique sexual orientation.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other words: Having no sexual orientation is itself a sexual orientation.\u00a0Just like being gay<\/a>, straight, bisexual<\/a>, pansexual, etc., etc., etc. Now, one asexual man<\/a> has opened up to\u00a0HuffPost<\/em><\/a> about his experiences surviving in a very non-asexual world.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me, asexuality has always meant simply a lack of sexual attraction,\u201d Ace (not his real name) says. \u201cThere definitely are shades of asexuality.\u00a0\u2026 There are asexuals who identify as sex<\/a>-repulsed, sex<\/a>-favorable, or any where in between.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ace explains that many people\u00a0treat\u00a0asexuality, in general, the same way they do bisexuality, like it\u2019s just a phase, or a\u00a0joke, or some sort of character flaw.<\/p>\n

\u201cAsexuality is often portrayed as a joke or juvenile or as a result of another \u2018undesirable\u2019 quality in a character,\u201d he says. \u201cAs I get older, I also experience a lot of young adults making rude or ill-informed comments about people who might not like sex<\/a>. I realize that a few ignorant comments aren\u2019t so bad, but they do hurt just a little.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since it\u2019s not taken seriously, Ace says, there are a lot of misunderstandings\u00a0surrounding it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve read a lot of articles, opinion pieces, and social media posts telling asexuals that we are wrong or ill or confused,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve had one person in my personal life try to convince me otherwise, but they turned out to be a very unsupportive friend in many other instances.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continues: \u201cUltimately, it\u2019s not up to any person to make the label for another. Sexuality can be a very private thing; we can each label our own if we so choose, but I don\u2019t think it\u2019s fair to label anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another common misconception Ace hears is that asexuality is a result of some sort of negative sexual experience in a person\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust like any human experience, there are an infinite amount of ways asexuality can come to be,\u201d he explains. \u201cSometimes a person might experience a traumatic event, or have a hormonal imbalance, or any other cause, but it also happens without stimulus as well. In all cases, it doesn\u2019t matter how the asexuality \u2018came to be,\u2019 if a person identifies as asexual, then you should take their word for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

So where do we go from here? The answer is simple: Education, of course!<\/p>\n

\u201cJust to learn as much as you can,\u201d Ace says. \u201cThere are millions of different ways to experience life, and it is difficult for a lot of people to empathize with an experience they don\u2019t like or understand. Knowledge and understanding are the keys to tolerance.\u201d<\/p>\n
