<\/a><\/p>\nThis week in New Music: 90s shoegaze act Ride<\/strong> are back with the gorgeous single \u201cHome is a Feeling,\u201d\u00a080s\/90s-leaning indie rock with no twist from\u00a0Communions<\/strong>,\u00a0The Orwells<\/strong> are not\u00a0Terrible Human Beings<\/em> they\u2019re just very naughty boys<\/a> and\u00a0Xiu Xiu<\/strong> (above) follow up their\u00a0Twin Peaks<\/em> tribute album with the cryptic\u00a0Forever<\/em>.<\/p>\n Ride \u2013\u00a0\u201cHome is a Feeling\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Happily, based on earlier track \u201cCharm Assault\u201d and \u201cHome is a Feeling,\u201d the lads haven\u2019t lost it.<\/p>\n This, indie kids, is how you do it.<\/p>\n Perfect!<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Communions \u2013 <\/b>Blue<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n Their debut album <\/span>Blue<\/span><\/i> holds no great surprises but if you like your rock wispy with a hint of summer via 80s nostalgia you can\u2019t go far wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n Although the band would appear to be aiming for <\/span>Strokes <\/b>credibility, songs like \u201cPassed You By\u201d and \u201cGot To Be Free\u201d verge on straight out 80s pop acts like Deacon Blue whereas \u201cDon\u2019t Hold Anything Back\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s Like Air\u201d are clear rip offs of <\/span>Oasis<\/b>. Which is fine really because Oasis were a rip off of the entire history of rock.<\/span><\/p>\n That\u2019s possibly the point with bands like Communions \u2013 indie pop\/rock has been done to death and there\u2019s really nothing new to say.<\/span><\/p>\n However, the Danish quartet have a knack for keeping it light and while the album is never, <\/span>ever<\/span><\/i> clever it\u2019s an earworm from first listen.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n The Orwells \u2013 <\/b>Terrible Human Beings<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n As with Communions, The Orwells wear their influences heavily and without irony but more <\/span>Weezer<\/b><\/a> than <\/span>Oasis<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cGood boys<\/a> come in last\/Bad girl<\/a> by my side\/Poppin\u2019 pills on the fly\/Cold grave when I die\u201d they sing on \u201cThey Put a Body in the Bayou\u201d and that sums it up. <\/span><\/p>\n The Orwells seem to think they are indie rock gods who could well throw a television from a hotel bedroom window if they had one too many Coors Lights but listening to <\/span>Terrible Human Beings<\/span><\/i> you know they won\u2019t really because mom might find out.<\/span><\/p>\n The Orwells are significantly more successful than Communions for no other reason than luck and marketing. <\/span><\/p>\n If either band gets featured by Zane Lowe<\/a> on Apple Music they\u2019ll be huge.<\/span><\/p>\n Album highlight \u2013 \u201cBlack Francis\u201d because\u00a0Black Francis\u00a0<\/strong>would be proud.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Xiu Xiu \u2013 <\/b>Forget<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n Following on from last year\u2019s excellent and timely tribute album <\/span>Plays the Music of Twin Peaks<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Xiu Xiu <\/b>(above)\u00a0<\/b>return with <\/span>Forget<\/span><\/i> which in many ways seems to be a distillation of the band\u2019s concerns over the last two decades.<\/span><\/p>\n For the uninitiated, Xiu Xiu do what the hell they want and it tends to be loud, obsessive, glitchy and experimental. On <\/span>Forget<\/span><\/i> think <\/span>Brian Ferry<\/b> on crack with <\/span>David Byrne<\/b> in the background trying to calm frontman <\/span>Jamie Stewart<\/b> down.<\/span><\/p>\n Be warned \u2013 Xiu Xiu are not for everyone and some might be offended by some of Stewart\u2019s lyrics but if you want something completely different and generally fancy a touch of <\/span>of Montreal<\/b> or <\/span>Joan of Arc<\/b> give it a go and prepare to be mesmerized by the sheer audacity of it all.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n The post NEW MUSIC: Ride, Communions, The Orwells, Xiu Xiu<\/a> appeared first on Towleroad<\/a>.<\/p>\n
\n<\/a><\/strong>When promised a follow-up to\u00a0Ride<\/strong>\u2018s 1996 album\u00a0Tarantula<\/em>, those\u00a0old enough to remember how fantastic they were may have been apprehensive at best. What could a bunch of middle aged men<\/a> have to say and how could they improve on albums like 1990\u2019s classic\u00a0Ride<\/em>.<\/p>\n
\n<\/a>Communions<\/b> is an indie pop\/rock outfit from Copenhagen, Denmark.<\/span><\/p>\n
\n<\/a>And as if to prove that bands like <\/span>Communions<\/b> can be successful despite having nothing new to say while saying it prettily we have <\/span>Terrible Human Beings<\/span><\/i>, the third album from Chicago-based indie rock wannabe bad boys<\/a> <\/span>The Orwells<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n
