Kiki, <\/em>a new documentary about LGBTQ youth of color and the kiki and ball scenes,\u00a0comes out in\u00a0select Los Angeles theaters and video<\/a> on demand services tomorrow,\u00a0Friday, February 24th<\/sup>. It will open in New York City March 1. The film follows those in the ballroom and kiki scenes over the course of four years;\u00a0showing everything from their involvement in the world of ballroom competitions, to their\u00a0personal stories of familial relationships and\u00a0homelessness, to political and HIV and AIDS advocacy. Made as a collaboration between Kiki gatekeeper, Twiggy Pucci Gar\u00e7on and the Swedish filmmaker Sara Jorden\u00f6, Kiki<\/em>\u00a0is largely considered to be a modern descendant to the 1990 documentary Paris is Burning<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"\"As well as being released on demand for Sundance Selects on IFC<\/a>, Kiki <\/em>will also get a limited theatrical run. For those in the Los Angeles area, this includes special screenings with Q&As following the film. On Friday night, February 24th, there will be a panel moderated by Trace Lysette of Transparent<\/em>, and on Saturday, February 25th<\/sup>, the panel will be moderated by actor and advocate Wilson Cruz. Both panels will include\u00a0director Sara Jorden\u00f6 and the film subjects Chi Chi, Chris, Twiggy, and Zariya. They will take place at the Laemmle Monica Film Center in Santa Monica at 7:10pm. Kiki’s message is more\u00a0important now than ever. The stories of queer and trans<\/a> young people of color are still\u00a0rarely told, much less\u00a0in such an in-depth way. Hearing these stories of resilience within this community is crucial, and Kiki <\/em>empowers these young people to share their own voices.
