How much credence should be given to Trump\u2019s well-documented, unambiguous promise<\/a>\u00a0to overturn Roe v. Wade<\/em>?<\/p>\n

A Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0op-ed<\/a> published on Wednesday serves up troubling food for thought\u00a0on the issue.<\/p>\n

The piece is penned by Nancy Northup and Rachel B. Tiven, the president and chief executive of the Center for Reproductive Rights and the chief executive of Lambda Legal, respectively.<\/p>\n

\u2026the organizations that won leading Supreme Court cases in recent years on sexual and reproductive rights: Obergefell v. Hodges<\/i> in 2015, which secured<\/a> legal protections for the marriage of same-sex<\/a> couples<\/a>, and Whole Woman\u2019s Health v. Hellerstedt<\/i> in 2016, which struck down<\/a> Texas\u2019s attempt to use sham health regulations to shut down 75 percent<\/a> of the state\u2019s abortion clinics.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The piece focuses on Trump\u2019s assertion that\u00a0Roe v. Wade\u00a0<\/em>\u201cwould be reversed\u201d and his offhand remark that marriage equality is \u201claw\u201d that was \u201csettled in the Supreme Court \u2014 it\u2019s done\u201d:<\/p>\n

\n

Was this a tactic to divide and conquer? To throw under the bus the tens of millions<\/a> of American women<\/a> who have had an abortion and hope marriage equality supporters would stand by in silence?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Emphasizing that a court couldn\u2019t possibly reverse the decision to make legal abortion available or effectively halt marriage equality,\u00a0Northup and Tiven reaffirm that these rights are \u201cfirmly rooted in the 14th Amendment\u2019s promise that there is \u2018a realm of personal liberty which the government may not enter.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

So whether or not Trump fully understands\u00a0the foundation of these decisions under the Constitution, his assertions threaten to undermine \u201cour right under the Constitution to decide who we are and to make the most intimate and personal decisions in our life without government interference.\u201d<\/p>\n

As far as Trump\u2019s Supreme Court nominee is concerned,\u00a0Northup and Tiven emphasize that it\u2019s essential the Senate Judiciary Committee knows whether Judge Neil Gorsuch \u201cstands with precedent and with each of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

Given the president\u2019s promise to take our rights away, we must ensure that full, detailed questions are asked of this nominee and that we get the answers we deserve. We will not allow ourselves to be divided. The rights of all here in this nation \u2014 not just women<\/a>, not just same-sex<\/a> couples<\/a> \u2014 depend on our vigilance.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The very reasonable fear here is that if Trump is successful in undermining Constitutionally-backed reproductive rights, an unprecedented Pandora\u2019s box of government interference\u00a0opens that threatens the private lives of citizens, and in particular LGBTQ people, who remain a highly vulnerable community.<\/p>\n
