Calling Donald Trump mentally ill is an insult to the mentally ill, psychiatrist says<\/b><\/p>\n

A group of 33 psychiatrists recently\u00a0wrote a letter<\/a> to\u00a0the New York Times<\/em> saying Donald Trump demonstrates \u201cgrave emotional instability\u201d that\u00a0\u201cmakes him incapable of serving safely as president.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Trump\u2019s speech and actions demonstrate an inability to tolerate views different from his own, leading to rage reactions,\u201d the letter stated. \u201cHis words and behavior suggest a profound inability to empathize. Individuals with these traits distort reality to suit their psychological state, attacking facts and those who convey them (journalists, scientists).\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, another leading psychiatrist is pushing back. But he\u2019s not defending Easy D or criticizing the doctors for breaking the American Psychiatric Association\u2019s 1973 Goldwater Rule, which states that it is unethical for mental health professionals to give an opinion about public figures they have not examined in person and obtained consent from to discuss their mental health.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s standing up\u00a0for the mentally ill.<\/p>\n

Dr. Allen Frances is a\u00a0professor emeritus of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Duke University Medical College and used to serve\u00a0chairman of the task force that wrote the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost amateur diagnosticians have mislabeled President Trump with the diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder,\u201d he writes in a letter to the editors at the New York Times<\/a><\/em>. \u201cI wrote the criteria that define this disorder, and Mr. Trump doesn\u2019t meet them. He may be a world-class narcissist, but this doesn\u2019t make him mentally ill, because he does not suffer from the distress and impairment required to diagnose mental disorder.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continues: \u201cMr. Trump causes severe distress rather than experiencing it and has been richly rewarded, rather than punished, for his grandiosity, self-absorption and lack of empathy. It is a stigmatizing insult to the mentally ill (who are mostly well behaved and well meaning) to be lumped with Mr. Trump (who is neither).\u201d<\/p>\n

Allen adds that mere bad behavior and\/or rudeness\/crassness\/assholery \u201cis rarely a sign of mental illness.\u201d In fact, he says, \u201cthe mentally ill behave badly only rarely.\u201d<\/p>\n

He concludes his letter by asking people to stop referring to Tiny Hands as mentally-ill or using psychiatric name-calling as a \u201cway of countering Mr. Trump\u2019s attack on democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe can, and should, be appropriately denounced for his ignorance, incompetence, impulsivity and pursuit of dictatorial powers,\u201d Allen says. \u201cHis psychological motivations are too obvious to be interesting, and analyzing them will not halt his headlong power grab.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe antidote to a dystopic Trumpean dark age is political, not psychological.\u201d<\/p>\n

You got that, folks? Stop calling Donald Trump \u201ccrazy\u201d and instead stick to calling him an ignorant, incompetent, impulsive, wannabe dictator.<\/p>\n
