Striker, 23, was found shot dead in an empty parking garage. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wtol.com\/story\/34493984\/police-no-leads-in-north-toledo-homicide\" target=\"_blank\">Police<\/a> do not yet have a suspect or a motive for her murder, but the case is under investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Striker\u2019s mother, Shanda Striker, described her as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toledoblade.com\/local\/2017\/02\/15\/North-Toledo-homicide-was-hate-crime-mother-says.html\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cfunny and entertaining\u201d<\/a> and said her family loved her deeply. \u201cI just have a plea to the community: if you know something, anything, please stand up,\u201d she told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wtol.com\/story\/34493984\/police-no-leads-in-north-toledo-homicide\" target=\"_blank\">WTOL 11.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Initial media reports identified Striker by the wrong gender, <a href=\"https:\/\/mic.com\/articles\/168632\/trans-woman-jo-jo-striker-shot-and-killed-in-toledo-initially-misgendered-in-media-reports#.oDc41mrcT\" target=\"_blank\">Mic<\/a> reported. This underscores the systematic undercounting of <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">transgender<\/a> murder victims. There is no mandatory national system ing whether homicide victims are <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">transgender<\/a>, so advocates rely on media reports to count how many <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">transgender<\/a> people are killed each year. In some cases, law enforcement, local media, or family and friends misidentify a victim\u2019s gender\u2014as they did with Striker. In others, they may report the victim\u2019s gender correctly but not disclose the fact that they were <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">transgender<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Striker\u2019s death reflects a pattern of violence against the <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">transgender<\/a> community, particularly <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/?mp_code=akftr\">women<\/a> of color. Striker\u2019s is the third murder of a <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">transgender<\/a> <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/?mp_code=akftr\">woman<\/a> of color HRC has identified in 2017. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/blog\/hrc-mourns-jamie-lee-wounded-arrow-trans-woman-murdered-in-south-dakota\">Jamie Lee Wounded Arrow<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/blog\/hrc-mourns-mesha-caldwell-first-reported-trans-murder-victim-of-2017\">Mesha Caldwell<\/a> were killed in January. Of the 22 murders of <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">transgender<\/a> people HRC <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/violence-against-the-transgender-community-in-2016\">ed in 2016<\/a>, more than three in four victims were Black, and 86 percent were <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/?mp_code=akftr\">women<\/a>. In their 2016 report on anti-<a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">transgender<\/a> violence, <a href=\"http:\/\/hrc-assets.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/\/files\/assets\/resources\/A-Matter-of-Life-and-Death-2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><em>A Matter of Life and Death<\/em><\/a>, HRC and the Trans People of Color Coalition explained that racism, sexism and anti-<a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">transgender<\/a> stigma together \u201cexponentially\u201d increase the likelihood that <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">transgender<\/a> <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/?mp_code=akftr\">women<\/a> of color will experience violence.<\/p>\n<p>Striker is the seventh <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">transgender<\/a> <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/?mp_code=akftr\">woman<\/a> reported killed in Ohio since 2013, the majority of them <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/?mp_code=akftr\">women<\/a> of color. In 2016, two other black <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">transgender<\/a> <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/?mp_code=akftr\">women<\/a>\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/blog\/hrc-mourns-transgender-woman-brandi-bledsoe-found-dead-in-cleveland\">Brandi Bledsoe<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/blog\/hrc-mourns-transgender-woman-brandi-bledsoe-found-dead-in-cleveland\">Rae&#8217;Lynn Thomas<\/a>\u2014were murdered in the state. Thomas was allegedly killed in a bias-motivated attack by her mother\u2019s ex-boyfriend, while Bledsoe\u2019s death remains unsolved. Ohio\u2019s hate crime law does not cover crimes motivated by gender identity or sexual orientation.<\/p>\n<p>Transgender murder victims from Ohio account for about nine percent of the cases HRC has ed; nationally, about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/stories\/latest-crime-statistics-released\" target=\"_blank\">three percent of all reported murders<\/a> take place in Ohio.
