Celebrating outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts,\u00a0the 48th NAACP Image Awards aired tonight live<\/a> from Pasadena, CA, and LGBTQ stories and talent were among those honored.<\/p>\n

Moonlight<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>took\u00a0home the award for Outstanding Independent Motion Picture, along with wins for Mahershala Ali<\/strong> in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in Motion Picture category, and Barry Jenkins<\/strong>, who won in both the outstanding directing and writing categories.The coming of age story of a black inner city Miami youth as told through three stages in his life, the film was nominated in a total of six categories.<\/p>\n

\"\"In the television categories, Queen Sugar<\/em>,<\/strong><\/a> in its first year, snagged the award for Outstanding Television Drama, and\u00a0Ava DuVernay<\/strong>\u00a0won the Outstanding Writing\u00a0award for her work on the series.\u00a0<\/i>Jussie Smollett\u00a0<\/strong>took home the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series award\u00a0for his breakout role on Empire<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>and The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>starring out actress Sarah Paulson <\/strong>in the role of Marcia Clark, enjoyed wins in three categories.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But tonight’s winners are just a sampling of the LGBTQ-inclusive nominees at this year’s Image Awards in what was a banner year for LGBTQ storylines, characters, and talent.<\/p>\n

In addition to being nominated in the marquee category of Entertainer of the Year,\u00a0Viola Davis<\/strong>\u00a0was\u00a0also up for\u00a0Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of bisexual<\/a> lawyer and professor Annalise Keating on ABC\u2019s\u00a0How to Get Away with Murder<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, transgender classical pianist and songwriter\u00a0Our Lady J<\/strong>\u00a0was among the nominees\u00a0in the \u00a0Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series category for her work on\u00a0Transparent<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Out director, showrunner and President of the Directors Guild of America,\u00a0Paris Barclay <\/strong>was\u00a0nominated for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for the pilot episode of FOX\u2019\u00a0Pitch<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 In the Comedy Series category,\u00a0Marta Cunningham<\/strong>\u00a0received\u00a0recognition with\u00a0an Outstanding Directing nomination for the \u201cExciting and New\u201d episode of Amazon\u2019s\u00a0Transparent<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Several LGBTQ-inclusive television favorites were\u00a0also honored by the NAACP with nominations.\u00a0\u00a0Atlanta<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(FX) was\u00a0up for\u00a0Outstanding Comedy Series.\u00a0 Award-winning actress and trans<\/a> advocate\u00a0Laverne Cox<\/strong>\u00a0was nominated as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Sophia in Netflix\u2019\u00a0Orange is the New Black<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Joining Laverne was\u00a0her co-star\u00a0Uzo Aduba (<\/strong>Suzanne \u201cCrazy Eyes\u201d Warren), with a nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series.<\/p>\n

Receiving a nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie, Limited-Series or Dramatic Special,\u00a0Audra McDonald<\/strong>\u00a0was\u00a0recognized for her\u00a0tperformance as the openly bisexual<\/a> jazz vocalist of the 1930\u2019s, Billie Holiday, in HBO\u2019s\u00a0Lady Day in Emerson\u2019s Bar & Grill<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Tituss Burgess<\/strong>\u00a0was\u00a0nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for role Titus Andromedon on Netflix\u2019\u00a0Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n
