The 48th NAACP Image Awards air live<\/a> on Saturday night,\u00a0and the acclaimed independent film Moonlight<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is up for awards in\u00a0several categories, while a number of LGBTQ-inclusive television shows are also nominated, including Transparent<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and Orange is the New Black<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The coming of age story of a black inner city Miami youth as told through three stages in his life, Moonlight<\/a><\/em> <\/strong>is nominated for Outstanding Motion Picture and Outstanding Independent Motion Picture.\u00a0 Its creator Barry Jenkins <\/strong>is in the runing two more times for Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture (Film). \u00a0Additionally, two featured players are nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture:\u00a0 Mahershala Ali<\/strong> (Juan) and Trevante Rhodes<\/strong> as the older Chiron.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Celebrating outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts, as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors, the NAACP Image Awards honors content and individuals across media categories, from television and film to literature and news.<\/p>\n

Loving<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, the story of the U.S. Supreme Court case that struck down the ban on interracial marriages, becoming the foundational argument for winning marriage equality,\u00a0is\u00a0also nominated for Outstanding Motion Picture and Outstanding Independent Motion Picture.\u00a0 Actress Ruth Negga<\/strong> (Mildred Loving) is nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture, joined by Alano Miller<\/strong> (Raymond) in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture category.\u00a0 The film also garndered director Jeff Nichols<\/strong> a nod\u00a0for Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture.<\/p>\n

\"ViolaIn addition to being nominated in the marquee category of Entertainer of the Year, Viola Davis<\/strong> is also up for\u00a0Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of bisexual<\/a> lawyer and professor Annalise Keating on ABC\u2019s How to Get Away with Murder<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"OurMeanwhile, transgender classical pianist and songwriter Our Lady J<\/strong>\u00a0is nominated in the \u00a0Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series category for her work on Transparent<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Out director, showrunner and President of the Directors Guild of America, Paris Barclay\u00a0<\/strong>is nominated for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for the pilot episode of FOX\u2019 Pitch<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 In the Comedy Series category, Marta Cunningham<\/strong> receives recognition with\u00a0an Outstanding Directing nomination for the \u201cExciting and New\u201d episode of Amazon\u2019s Transparent<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Several LGBTQ-inclusive television favorites are also honored by the NAACP with nominations. \u00a0Atlanta<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (FX) is up for\u00a0Outstanding Comedy Series.\u00a0 Award-winning actress and trans<\/a> advocate Laverne Cox<\/strong> is nominated as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Sophia in Netflix\u2019 Orange is the New Black<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Joining Laverne is her co-star Uzo Aduba<\/strong> (Suzanne \u201cCrazy Eyes\u201d Warren), with a nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series.<\/p>\n

Nominated for Outstanding Television Movie, Limited-Series or Dramatic Special, is FX\u2019s\u00a0The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story<\/a>\u00a0, <\/em><\/strong>which\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>featured out actress Sarah Paulson<\/strong> as prosecuting attorney Marcia Clark.\u00a0 Receiving a nom for Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie, Limited-Series or Dramatic Special, Audra McDonald<\/strong>\u00a0is recognized for her\u00a0tour de force performance as the openly bisexual<\/a> jazz vocalist and song stylist of the 1930\u2019s, Billie Holiday, in HBO\u2019s Lady Day in Emerson\u2019s Bar & Grill<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Tituss Burgess<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his breakout performance as Titus Andromedon on Netflix\u2019 Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Finishing up his third season on the hit FOX series Empire<\/em><\/strong>, out actor\u00a0Jussie Smollett <\/strong>is\u00a0also<\/strong>\u00a0recognized in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category. \u00a0<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0Outstanding Drama Series category are\u00a0FOX\u2019s Empire<\/em><\/strong> and OWN\u2019s Queen Sugar<\/a>, <\/em><\/strong>and <\/em><\/strong>Kerry Washington<\/strong>\u00a0is nominated in the Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series. Washington was the recipient of GLAAD’s\u00a02015 GLAAD Vanguard Award, which goes to an LGBTQ ally whose impact has been substantial and far-reaching.<\/p>\n

Taking place at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, this year\u2019s NAACP Image Awards will air live on TV ONE on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 9 pm ET<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
