Ross Cameron is a conservative former Australian MP for Parramatta who earned a slew of dubious headlines this week after a homophobic speech he gave to Sydney\u2019s right-wing Q Society surfaced.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s also currently employed by Sky as the host of a political show, and he found himself at the mercy of a colleague who wasn\u2019t willing to let him off the hook about the speech.<\/p>\n

Not that the speech is defensible in any way. In it, he referred to the Sydney Morning Herald<\/em> newspaper as the \u201cSydney Morning Homosexual\u201d and then claims the Liberal Party is \u201cbasically a gay<\/a> club.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t mind that they are gay<\/a>,\u201d he adds. \u201cI just wish, like Hadrian, they would build a wall. \u201d<\/p>\n

To give a sense of exactly what kind of event this was, a ring-wing cartoonist made the following \u201cjoke\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t stand Muslims\u2026 [but] they are not all bad, they do chuck pillow-biters off buildings.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why his colleague, television host Janine Perrett, went after him on live<\/a> television.<\/p>\n

After prodding Cameron to explain his speech, he said, \u201cI gave a very pro-gay<\/a> speech in which I said that gays<\/a> have been associated with the creative class since the beginning of history.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it was derogatory,\u201d Perrett said. \u201cWasn\u2019t it? You weren\u2019t giving them a good rap.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll accept it was a gag but I don\u2019t regard it as anti-gay<\/a>,\u201d Cameron responded. \u201cI would say that I didn\u2019t make a single, if you go through my remarks, I don\u2019t see a single sentence of my remarks that is critical of gays<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I object to is the Sydney Morning Herald taking the view that the vast sweep of Australians are homophobic, racist, rednecks.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Perrett asked whether he\u2019ll issue an apology, Cameron said the media took his remarks \u201cout of context.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he added, \u201cIf the reporting of these comments has caused someone to feel a greater sense of isolation over their attraction, then I very sincerely apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was the worst apology I have ever heard,\u201d Perrett shot back. \u201cSo if they weren\u2019t reported, then you wouldn\u2019t apologize?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t accept\u2026 if you read my speech, it was in defense of dissent,\u201d Cameron said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou knew this was going to come out publicly,\u201d Perrett said. \u201cYou can\u2019t just use the Donald Trump \u2018locker room talk\u2019 defense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI regard that as one of the strengths of the argument,\u201d Cameron said.<\/p>\n
