This is mostly due to a lack of backbone by their politicians, since an overwhelming majority of Australian voters supports the freedom to marry but\u00a0there is still enough vocal resistance to make elected officials nervous about taking a stand.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the\u00a0country\u2019s seen a humiliating series of suggested solutions,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.queerty.com\/comedian-jim-jefferies-wants-marriage-equality-australia-gayest-place-earth-20160831\">but no actual solutions.<\/a>\u00a0Some politicians have\u00a0tried to duck the issue altogether by proposing a nationwide vote \u2014 which would be unbelievably expensive, incite violence against\u00a0LGBT people, and\u00a0ultimately be pointless and\u00a0non-binding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.queerty.com\/australias-first-gay-aboriginal-politician-makes-impassioned-case-marriage-equality-20161020\" target=\"_blank\">Australia\u2019s First Gay Aboriginal Politician Makes Impassioned Case For Marriage Equality<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So while much of the\u00a0world <a href=\"http:\/\/definingmarriage.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">moves at a brisk pace towards marriage equality<\/a>, Australia has remained stationary.
