Melania Trump\u2019s platform as First Lady\u00a0is combating online bullying\u2026 against\u00a0herself and her family.<\/a> She\u2019s currently embroiled in two multi-million dollar libel lawsuits against\u00a0people who\u00a0she feels said mean and untrue things about her on the internet.<\/p>\n

One of the outlets the First Lady is suing is\u00a0the\u00a0Daily Mail<\/em> over a story it published last year\u00a0suggesting she had once worked as an\u00a0\u201cescort.\u201d\u00a0The story covered\u00a0Melania\u2019s journey from Europe\u00a0to New York in the mid-1990s and claimed\u00a0that she\u00a0became connected with a wealthy\u00a0New York entrepreneur shortly after arriving in the Big Apple, who allegedly operated an escort agency for wealthy clients, which she may or may not have worked for.<\/p>\n

Immediately upon the story\u2019s publication, Melania\u2019s team put out a statement saying the claims were totally \u201cfalse\u201d and insisting she only \u201cdid legitimate and legal modeling work for legitimate business entities and did not work for any \u2018gentleman\u2019s club\u2019 or \u2018escort\u2019 agencies.\u201d Then she filed a libel lawsuit against the publication.<\/p>\n

Now, here\u2019s where it gets weird.<\/p>\n

Melania\u00a0filed the\u00a0lawsuit\u00a0in Maryland. Her lawyers argued that the\u00a0company\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>advertisements target users in the state, and so filing\u00a0the suit was proper. In response, the website\u2019s parent company, Mail Media, filed a motion to have the case dismissed on the grounds that it wasn\u2019t filed in the proper jurisdiction. (Both the\u00a0Daily Mail <\/em>and Mail Media are based in the U.K.)<\/p>\n

Now, Maryland Circuit Court Judge Sharon Burrell has ruled in favor of the\u00a0Daily Mail.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201c[T]here is nothing about the parties that connects the case against MMI to Maryland\u2013MMI does not have an office in Maryland, Plaintiff does not live<\/a> in Maryland, and the witnesses are not located in Maryland,\u201d Burrell wrote in her ruling. \u201cIt would be unreasonable as a matter of constitutional due process for this Court to exert jurisdiction over MMI or MailOnline in the State of Maryland.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melania\u2019s other libel lawsuit<\/a>, the one demanding $150 million from\u00a0blogger Webster Griffin Tarpley, however, will proceed in the Maryland Circuit Court, since Tarpley lives in Maryland.<\/p>\n

The First Lady\u2019s attorney Charles Harder has not yet commented on the ruling, though we\u2019re sure\u00a0she won\u2019t be going to give up that easily. After all, a source close to Melania told US Weekly<\/em>\u00a0this week that she is \u201cvery much embracing the role and responsibilities of First Lady,\u201d of which online bullying is her top priority.<\/p>\n
