Video of him being pepper-sprayed protesting Muslim ban went viral, now he\u2019s speaking out<\/b><\/p>\n

To some, he is known simply as \u201cThe Guy in Pink.\u201d To others, such as The Conservative Post<\/em>, he is a \u201cliberal thug.\u201d But to everyone else, he is Kent Thomas, a 26-year-old man<\/a> from Tacoma, WA whose Muslim ban protest video<\/a> went viral\u00a0on social media. <\/span><\/p>\n

The video<\/a>, which depicts Thomas getting pepper sprayed, slammed to the ground, and ultimately arrested at Sea-Tac International Airport in Seattle, was\u00a0featured on CNN and viewed nearly 5 million times (and counting) on Facebook alone. It is a number not even Thomas expected.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[The response to the video] has been really overwhelming personally, <\/span>but there has been such an outpouring of support, from lawyers offering their legal advice, to people all across the country randomly messaging me,\u201d he\u00a0tells Queerty\u00a0<\/em>in a phone interview.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

While thankful for the outpour, Thomas hopes it goes beyond just him and his arrest. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI really hope [the response] is not just focused on me, but that it is something that can be turned into actual action and care for refugees,\u201d he says. \u201cIt is otherworldly to me that we\u2019re actually going to shut our border to actual real, feeling humans that need safety and protection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Thomas was compelled to join the protest after seeing his pastor participating. At first, he\u00a0thought it would be quick. \u201c<\/span>Walking in, I thought I would lurk, show my presence and maybe contribute by chanting,\u201d he says. <\/span><\/p>\n

But things\u00a0quickly escalated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before long, he\u00a0found himself pushed toward the front of the line, his pink \u201cI STAND WITH PLANNED PARENTHOOD\u201d shirt sticking out like a sore thumb in a sea of grey and black clothing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thomas says things got \u201creally real\u201d when the police started shoving. The more they shoved, however, the more \u201cconvicted\u201d Thomas felt. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI realized that there were actual detainees at [the airport] and it made me just think, if I were in that position, in some foreign country, I would sure as hell hope those citizens would mobilize to help me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Eventually,\u00a0he was pepper sprayed, tackled by four police, and his hands zip-tied.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere was so much adrenaline in that moment, I don\u2019t remember feeling it at all,\u201d he recalls. \u201cI kind of went into this altered state of \u2018What\u2019s happening?\u2019 and then all of the sudden, I was on the ground. It felt really vulnerable. I mean, these four very buff men<\/a> [were tackling me], and it felt like I was nothing more than a towel or feather to them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Thomas\u2019s husband, Mike, was\u00a0watching the protests on Facebook Live when he heard Thomas getting arrested. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I was shocked, but immediately grabbed my keys and started driving to the airport,\u201d he says. \u201cI didn\u2019t know where to go, but I knew I needed to get close to him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The next day, Mike had the chance to watch the video<\/a> firsthand on CNN. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was much more brutal than I expected,\u201d Mike says. \u201cIt was really hard watching the person I love be treated that way. I keep seeing the video<\/a> [on social media], and it hasn\u2019t got much easier to watch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The police later released Thomas, once the pepper spray in his eyes subsided. <\/span>\u201cIt turns out water makes it much<\/i> worse,\u201d he says, with a laugh. While some of the police were obviously aggressive and provoking, others demonstrated they \u201chad actual feelings,\u201d Thomas says. During the bus ride out of the airport, one officer told the group of protesters that they should be proud for standing up for their beliefs, Thomas says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As for the protest itself, Thomas says it was an eye-opener. After all, it was his non-LGBTQ-related protest, and there was a certain level of fear about how he\u2013a white, privileged gay<\/a> male<\/a>\u2013might be perceived.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a fear that I could be perceived as, or actually be, a fraud\u2026 or that my presence might not actually be helping,\u201d he says. \u201cBut then I remembered that, as a gay<\/a> person, it means so much to me when I see straight people showing up [to support LGBTQ causes].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Not to mention, the protest was a learning experience. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was humbling to realize that I have to grow in my awareness of issues,\u201d Thomas explains. \u201cJust because [an issue] doesn\u2019t affect me directly, doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s an ounce less important.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And as for his favorite pink shirt? Thomas is not too worried. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe shoulder is torn and it\u2019s completely ruined,\u201d he notes. \u201cBut it is a good souvenir for what happened. It\u2019s worth it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
