Peter Kim is a Chicago-based comedian and self-described \u201cfabulous husky gaysian\u201d and he has something to say about the subtle tones of white supremacy he is forced to deal\u00a0with on a near daily basis.<\/p>\n

Kim recalls going to an audition where a man<\/a> complimented him for being\u00a0\u201calmost white.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMe, an Asian-American, being almost white? Meaning what?\u201d Kim asks. \u201cThat I\u2019m not black or Latino or any skin complexion darker than white? In saying so, he\u2019s assuming that white people are the default race in this country, that I am almost normal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd this isn\u2019t some ignorant racist,\u201d he adds.\u00a0\u201cThis is a liberal creative person living in Chicago.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it doesn\u2019t stop there. Kim says the problem is everywhere.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou see, this happens to me all the time, even in places I never thought would exist,\u201d he explains. \u201cSee, I\u2019m a Korean man<\/a> who\u2019s also gay<\/a>. And when I finally came out and downloaded the dating app Grindr\u2013spoiler alert, ain\u2019t nobody dating on Grindr\u2013I was overwhelmed by profiles saying no fems, no fats, no Asians.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I would say to myself, well, that can\u2019t be me, because, according to my mom, I\u2019m not fat, I\u2019m husky.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

And then there is the question he can\u2019t seem to escape no matter where he goes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I get asked the question where are you from, and I respond, \u2018Oh, New York,\u2019 most of the time, well-meaning white people get upset and ask, \u2018You know what I mean. Where are you from-from?’\u201d Kim says. \u201cMy boyfriend, who is from Minnesota, whose family has roots in Sweden, never has to explain where he\u2019s from-from.\u201d<\/p>\n
