Today, GLAAD announced the nominees for the 28th Annual GLAAD <\/a>Media Awards<\/a>,\u00a0and the list includes several stories of LGBTQ people living with HIV or AIDS.<\/p>\n

ABC\u2019s How to Get Away with Murder<\/em>, Amazon\u2019s Transparent<\/em>, and Showtime\u2019s Shameless<\/em> are the only scripted series on television to include HIV-positive characters.\u00a0Oxygen\u2019s The Prancing Elites Project<\/em>\u00a0includes dance team member\u00a0Kareem Davis, who is HIV-positive.\u00a0In HBO’s Looking: The Movie<\/em>, nominated for\u00a0Outstanding TV Movie or Limited Series, featured the wedding of a serodiscordant couple<\/a>, Eddie — a character who is HIV positive — marries his partner \u00a0Agust\u00edn.<\/p>\n

Nominated for Outstanding Digital Journalism – Multimedia, “No Access: Youth, Black & Positive” of Tonic.Vice.com<\/a> explored why HIV disproportionately affects black gay<\/a> and bisexual<\/a> men<\/a> in the U.S. South.\"\"\u00a0The Nation<\/em> earned a nod for “HIV Mystery: Solved?” by Tim Murphy, an article on increasing access to PrEP — a pill taken once a day to prevent HIV infection — for black gay<\/a> and bisexual<\/a> men<\/a>. SFChronicle.com<\/a>‘s “Last Men Standing: AIDS Survivors Still Fighting for Their Lives,” by Erin Allday, featured several elder gay<\/a> men<\/a> who have been living with HIV for decades and shed light on their needs not being addressed by the city.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Other nominees highlighting HIV issues\u00a0include HBO’s Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures <\/em>and Outstanding Blog nominees My Fabulous Disease and I Am Josh.<\/p>\n

Since its foundation, GLAAD has worked to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS prevention and treatment. In 2015, GLAAD and\u00a0The Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation<\/a>\u00a0released a\u00a0public service announcement (PSA)<\/a>\u00a0in an effort to reignite the passion and action needed to beat the HIV and AIDS epidemic. GLAAD has also created a\u00a0guide<\/a>\u00a0for reporting HIV & AIDS-related stories in the news to help end the negative stigma associated with the disease. The GLAAD Media Awards<\/a> recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian<\/a>, gay<\/a>, bisexual<\/a>, transgender, and queer community and the issues that affect their lives. The GLAAD Media Awards<\/a> also fund GLAAD’s work to amplify stories from the LGBTQ community and issues that build support for equality and acceptance.<\/p>\n
