Trump touts incredible record on LGBTQ rights, leaves Obama\u2019s workplace protections intact<\/b><\/p>\n

Amid rumors that President Trump was readying an executive order to roll back some\u00a0workplace protections gained by gay<\/a>, lesbian<\/a>, bisexual<\/a> and transgender people under Obama, the White House has said no change will be made in that specific area.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued by the White House, Trump\u2019s record on gay<\/a> rights was strongly played up.<\/p>\n

Here they are laying it on thick:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cPresident Trump continues to be respectful and supportive of L.G.B.T.Q. rights, just as he was throughout the election,\u201d the statement said. \u201cThe president is proud to have been the first ever G.O.P. nominee to mention the L.G.B.T.Q. community in his nomination acceptance speech, pledging then to protect the community from violence and oppression.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The 2014 order banned companies that do business with the federal government from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, marking the first time in history the government explicitly protected workers from the latter.<\/p>\n

The decision to leave the order intact, the statement said, was Trump\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Less clear is whether Trump will put forth\u00a0any other executive actions\u00a0that affect the LGBT community negatively. So-called \u201creligious liberty\u201d provisions could allow widespread discrimination, and for that reason alone, it\u2019s vital the public holds\u00a0the President\u2019s feet to the fire.<\/p>\n

While Trump has consistently opposed\u00a0marriage equality, he has said his view is \u201cirrelevant<\/a>\u201d as the law has been settled by the courts. However, he has stated\u00a0that on issues like abortion, the law is less iron clad. One of his first actions as president was to ban any federal funding to international health organizations that perform or\u00a0provide information on abortions.<\/p>\n

With a Supreme Court nomination expected Tuesday, both issues have the potential to take center stage.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s tough to really chalk this up as a victory when, as HRC president Chad Griffin said, \u201cLGBTQ refugees, immigrants, Muslims and women<\/a> are scared today, and with good reason.\u201d<\/p>\n
