PHOTOS: A candid view from the front lines of the gay<\/a> liberation movement in 1970s Los Angeles<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cI decided to shoot The\u00a0<\/em>Gay Essay<\/em> for a variety of reasons,\u201d Los Angeles-based photographer Anthony Friedkin tells\u00a0Queerty<\/em>\u00a0in an exclusive interview.\u00a0<\/em>\u201cI wanted to photograph gay<\/a> people who were living an open gay<\/a> life and where proud of it. It\u2019s my personal belief that all human beings are unique when it comes to their sexual identity, as unique as our finger prints are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fiedkin\u2019s exhibition titled The Gay Essay<\/em> will be\u00a0on display at Daniel Cooney Fine Art<\/a>, a contemporary art gallery in New York City, February 12 through March 4. The exhibition will feature a total of 70 photographs documenting the gay<\/a> liberation movement in Los Angeles and San Francisco from 1969 to 1973.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I look back on the pictures, I\u2019m reminded of all the reasons why I became a photographer in the first place,\u201d he adds. \u201cPortraits are pillars in the history of photography. It\u2019s my hope that when people engage with these photographs they will\u00a0 remember how courageous many of the LGBTQ\u00a0people were who allowed me to photograph and document their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
