It\u2019s happening: Major LGBT march on Washington set for D.C. Pride weekend<\/b><\/p>\n

Drawing inspiration from last weekend\u2019s Women\u2019s March on Washington, a gay<\/a> activist in New York City has announced plans for the National Pride March, a \u201cmass\u201d LGBT protest at the nation\u2019s capital on June 11.<\/p>\n

David Bruinooge, 42, of Brooklyn, N.Y., announced the plan on Facebook and created an event page<\/a> for those interested in keeping up with the progress of the protest.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe urge all supporters, friends, and family to descend on DC for the Pride 2017 weekend (June 8-11th) to make sure our voices are heard,\u201d part of the post reads.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The march will coincide with Capital Pride, D.C.\u2019s annual pride celebration, and organizers hope to draw big\u00a0numbers to send a clear message to Washington\u2019s powered elite that LGBTQ rights are not to be threatened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was watching the events [of the Women\u2019s March] unfold on TV and I was very proud and inspired by all the women<\/a>, the strong women<\/a> in our country who were kind of taking this to the street and getting their voices heard,\u201d Bruinooge\u00a0told the Washington Blade<\/em><\/a>. \u201cAnd in the back of my mind as an openly gay<\/a> man<\/a> I thought the gay<\/a> community should be doing something like this to follow up on the momentum,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Ryan Bos, executive director of the Capital Pride Alliance, has been in touch with Bruinooge and is expected to work to bring the march into the fold of official Capital Pride events.<\/p>\n

Bos has already made one smart call<\/a>, urging\u00a0Bruinooge to change the name\u00a0of the event, originally \u201cGays on the Mall,\u201d to the inclusive \u201cNational Pride March.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will be an ALL-inclusive and peaceful event,\u201d reads the announcement on Facebook.<\/p>\n

The last major LGBT protest in D.C. was the National Equality March in 2009, which called for full equality for LGBTQ people in all matters of civil law, in all 50 states. At that time, only five states had legal same-sex<\/a> marriage. It drew participants in the hundreds of thousands.<\/p>\n
