Fresh off the heels from\u00a0winning a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Drama, MOONLIGHT<\/a>, <\/strong><\/em>the coming of age story of an inner city black queer youth, today received eight Oscar\u00ae nominations, including one for Best Picture<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\"MahershalaOthers noms for MOONLIGHT<\/strong><\/em> include Adapted\u00a0Screenplay, Cinematography, Film Editing and Original Score.\u00a0Individual nominations included:\u00a0Barry Jenkins for Best Director,\u00a0Mahershala Ali for Best Supporting Actor and Naomie Harris for Best Supporting Actress. \u00a0While other LGBTQ films have garnered major individual honors, MOONLIGHT<\/strong><\/em> is notable for the number of nominations acquired within a single year within the Academy’s\u00a0history.\u00a0The last LGBTQ film to\u00a0receive\u00a0eight nominations was the Harvey Milk biopic MILK<\/strong><\/em> (2008), which took home two statuettes: \u00a0Best Original Screenplay for Dustin Lance Black and Best Actor for Sean Penn.<\/p>\n

Ruth Negga was nominated (Best Actress) for her strong and focused performance in LOVING<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, the story behind the Supreme Court decision that many say paved the way for marriage equality.\u00a0The Documentary Feature category also\u00a0featured a diverse group of nominees, including\u00a0I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO<\/strong><\/em>, 13th<\/em><\/strong>,<\/em>\u00a0and OJ: MADE IN AMERICA<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In an early morning announcement, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs<\/a> was joined by several Oscar\u00ae-winning and nominated Academy members including Jennifer Hudson, Brie Larson, Emmanuel Lubezki, Jason Reitman and Ken Watanabe to reveal the 89th Oscars\u00ae nominations, a departure from their tradition of doing so in front of a live<\/a> audience.\u00a0 This year’s nominations were announced via a global live<\/a> stream at the Academy\u2019s online site<\/a>, on their digital platforms, via local broadcasters and on morning television programs.<\/p>\n
