NEW MUSIC: the xx, Of Montreal, Declan McKenna, Diet Cig<\/b><\/p>\n

This week in New Music: the xx<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0glacier begins to melt on album number three,\u00a0a surprise EP release from\u00a0Of Montreal<\/strong>, teen<\/a> rock rebellion by\u00a0Declan McKenna<\/strong> on\u00a0\u201cThe Kids Don\u2019t Wanna Come Home\u201d and classic indie guitar rock from\u00a0Diet Cig<\/strong>,<\/p>\n

the xx \u2013 \u201cSay Something Loving\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"the<\/a>On album number three, <\/span>the xx<\/b>\u00a0(above and right) appear to be expanding their sound from the dark, insular production evident on earlier work. In fact, the album opens with a horn fanfare which is jarring enough for fans that they might think they clicked play on The 1975<\/b><\/a><\/span>\u00a0in error.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not to worry though, this is the xx through and through.<\/span><\/p>\n

The album opens with \u201cDangerous\u201d \u2013 an upbeat track continuing with the horn theme \u2013 and is followed by \u201cSay Something Loving,\u201d the closest the trio of childhood best mates have ever come to a pop song and it really is wonderful.<\/span><\/p>\n

There would appear to be an actual theme running through the album as suggested by it\u2019s title. It\u2019s all about intimacy and expectation but not just sex<\/a>. It\u2019s also not an album of love songs, closing as it does with piano-led track \u201cTest Me\u201d on which Romy Madley Croft worries \u201cyou look but you never see, let\u2019s take it out on me, it\u2019s easier than saying what you mean, test me \u2013 see if I break, tell me if this time you\u2019ve changed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While the sound remains aloof and glacial, the detachment of youth is slowly warming.<\/span><\/p>\n

Happily, the first big album of 2017 is one of the best in many months.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n

Of Montreal \u2013\u00a0Rune Husk<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"of_montreal\"<\/a>Last week, Of Montreal surprise-released a new EP Rune Husk<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The four tracks see Kevin Barnes in perhaps slightly more introspective mood than on last album Innocence Reaches.\u00a0<\/em><\/span>In the sense at least as introspective as he can manage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cStag to the Stable\u201d is practically glam rock. \u201cWidowsucking\u201d is a classic Of Montreal hot mess. \u201cIsland Life\u201d is creepy brilliance that might make your skin crawl.<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, brilliant.<\/span><\/p>\n

Declan McKenna \u2013 \u201cThe Kids Don\u2019t Wanna Come Home\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

\"Declan-mckenna\"<\/a>For his 18th birthday, English indie rock rebel <\/span>Declan McKenna <\/b>released a clarion call<\/a> of nonconformity to the youth of today.<\/span><\/p>\n

While there is nothing particularly original about the song \u2013 and compared with earlier tracks like \u201cIsombard\u201d it\u2019s actually a bit standard \u2013 McKenna has that one trick up his sleeve that makes him stand out: he\u2019s a teen<\/a> calling on a generation with old-school rock \u2018n roll.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, while it\u2019s not original, understanding its appeal to the youth of today is easy because every generation needs a rebel (of sorts).<\/span><\/p>\n

Have a listen to the track and the brilliant \u201cIsombard\u201d as performed on Later With Jools Holland<\/em>\u00a0below.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n

Diet Cig \u2013 \u201cTummy Ache\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

\"diet-cig\"<\/a>Diet Cig<\/b> is Alex Luciano (guitar and vocals) and Noah Bowman (drums). The duo have just announced the release of their debut album, the brilliantly titled <\/span>Swear I\u2019m Good at This<\/span><\/i> this coming April.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the rawness of the music, Bowman\u2019s plaintive vocals, the wash of feedback and the thumping beats, lead track \u201cTummy Ache\u201d is an instant blast of classic indie rock along the lines of <\/span>Haley Bonar<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Building slowly to a thumping climax, the song closes out with Bowman rightly reminding us that \u201cIt\u2019s hard to be a punk when you\u2019re wearing a skirt.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n
