<\/a><\/p>\nBrandi Burgess, the daughter of homophobic conservative Christian radio host Rick Burgess came out\u00a0of the closet in an op-ed in which she said \u201cI\u2019m praying for my father.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rick Burgess is the host of the popular\u00a0Rick & Bubba show and has made no secret of his anti-gay<\/a> views. In 2010 he apologized<\/a> after saying, about homosexuality<\/a>, \u201cthere is, absolutely, no way, impossible, to biblically justify this lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n Brandi Burgess, an actress living in Philadelphia,\u00a0published the op-ed on AL.com<\/a> and wrote that though she was the subject of many of her father\u2019s on-air radio tales while growing up, she was \u201cerased\u201d by Burgess\u00a0after coming out to the family and says \u201crecently, I\u2019ve returned, cast as the prodigal daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n Writes Brandi<\/a>:<\/p>\n For the past three years, my father and I have been debating God\u2019s stance on homosexuality. It started with my Instagram post at a Pride parade: a picture of a mother holding a sign saying \u201cI love my gay<\/a> son.\u201d I got a text demanding its removal: \u201cHow dare you compromise my platform!?\u201d, \u201cRemember who you represent.\u201d, \u201cAre you a gay<\/a>?\u201d<\/p>\n I have been praying, researching and meditating on the many emails, sermons and verses my dad has sent me. I always come back to the same conclusion. Love is love.<\/p>\n I shared this with him. \u201cI love you. I\u2019m sorry. I still love God.\u201d I promised to be discrete.<\/p>\n This led to a constant barrage of shame.\u00a0 \u201cYou think you\u2019re so mod, so special. But you\u2019re nothing. You\u2019re typical.\u201d<\/p>\n Brandi\u00a0says on trips home\u00a0this summer she \u201cwasn\u2019t allowed too close to my siblings\u201d because she is gay<\/a> and her stepmother told her \u201cyou choose this or you choose us\u201d after she came out.<\/p>\n Brandi\u00a0says she let shame define her and does not want other kids to do the same, and that\u2019s why she wrote the piece:<\/p>\n So now, I am writing to the young women<\/a> who feel like they don\u2019t belong in their bodies, to the boys<\/a> who want to kiss boys<\/a>, and those on the spectrum between:<\/p>\n Perhaps you have heard my father on the radio and it makes you want to go to sleep and never wake up.<\/p>\n I love you. Your worth is untouchable. Find a good friend. Invest in therapy. Dance in the middle of the night and hold yourself accountable to the life you\u2019ve always wanted. At the root of all this hate speech is fear. This is not your fear to carry. Release it.<\/p>\n Rick and his wife Sherri spoke out about Brandi\u2019s editorial on his radio show. AL.com reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n To Brandi, he said: \u201cI told you before and I\u2019ll say it again you\u2019re my daughter and I will always love you. But I love you enough to tell you the truth. I\u2019m not going to come up with some version of love that really isn\u2019t love at all, that pats you on the back to justify you all the way to hell.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2026Sherri said she advised Brandi not to live<\/a> according to human passions, but according to God\u2019s will.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is not a battle between Rick and me and our daughter. It\u2019s a battle between good and evil,\u00a0 the Bible versus the world,\u00a0 God versus the world\u2026.I don\u2019t care if you\u2019re happy. I don\u2019t care if you\u2019re healthy. I care about your eternal salvation.\u201d<\/p>\n Added Rick: \u201cThis has become a new version of Christianity which is not biblical in any way shape or form.
