<\/a><\/p>\nOn FOX News Sunday<\/em>, Mike Pence defended remarks made by Donald Trump about Rep.\u00a0John Lewis<\/a>. Lewis said in an interview published Friday that he does not consider Trump a \u201clegitimate\u201d president and believes his election was a \u201cconspiracy\u201d on the part of the Russians.<\/p>\n Trump in turn attacked Lewis on Twitter, calling the civil rights icon, who had\u00a0his head cracked open as he walked\u00a0across the Pettus Bridge in Selma on Bloody Sunday, \u201call talk, no action.\u201d<\/p>\n Talking Points Memo reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n Pence said in an interview<\/a> on \u201cFox News Sunday\u201d that he has \u201cgreat respect\u201d for Lewis but was \u201cdeeply disappointed\u201d in his comments.<\/p>\n \u201cI was deeply disappointed to see someone of his stature question the legitimacy of Donald Trump\u2019s election as president and say he\u2019s not attending the inauguration,\u201d Pence said. \u201cI hope he reconsiders both positions.\u201d<\/p>\n Pence argued that Lewis\u2019 remarks were \u201can act of irresponsibility\u201d and Trump \u201chas the right to defend himself,\u201d according to Fox News\u2019 writeup<\/a> of the interview.<\/p>\n Added Pence:<\/p>\n \u201cI think \u2014 I think Donald Trump has the right to defend himself. \u00a0When someone of John Lewis\u2019 stature, someone who is not only an icon in the civil rights movement, but also someone who by virtue of his sacrifice on that day that we know as Bloody Sunday, he crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge and he suffered that abuse and it was \u2014 it was true that that the voting rights \u2014 for someone to use his stature to use terms like this is not a legitimate president, it\u2019s just \u2014 it\u2019s just deeply disappointing to me, and I hope he reconsiders it.<\/p>\n \u201cBut what Donald Trump was talking about their was literally generations of failed policies coming out of Washington, D.C., that have failed to many families and too many cities across this country. \u00a0I will tell you, Donald Trump is a man<\/a> who is profoundly impatient with failure.\u201d<\/p>\n Watch:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Today, Lewis honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.<\/p>\n Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was my friend, my mentor; he was like a big brother.<\/p>\n \u2014 John Lewis (@repjohnlewis) January 16, 2017<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Dr. King taught us to recognize the dignity and worth of every human being.
