In honor of the 3rd annual #BiWeek<\/a> (Bisexual Awareness Week), co-founded by GLAAD, GLAAD is hosting a panel discussion on bisexual<\/a>+ (bisexual<\/a>, pansexual, fluid, queer-identified, and unlabeled) representation in today’s ever-changing media landscape.<\/p>\n

GLAAD’s “Bi+ Representation in The Media: A #BiWeek Panel Discussion” will be moderated by Mathew Rodriguez<\/strong> (Mic), and will include bi<\/a>+ media experts Alex Berg<\/strong>, (Producer, HuffPost Video), Eliel Cruz<\/strong> (Executive Director, Faith in America; YouTuber; journalist), Bryan Ellicott<\/strong> (trans<\/a>* & bi<\/a> advocate; brought lawsuit against NYC for anti-trans<\/a> discrimination; BiNet USA board member), Ashley C. Ford <\/strong>(Matter Studios, Authorized, BuzzFeed, ELLE), and Denarii Monroe<\/strong> (Black Girl Dangerous, Everyday Feminism, Ravishly).<\/p>\n

Come check out these renowned panelists and hear how their intersecting identities inform their work in media, media’s role in fostering bi<\/a>+ acceptance and visibility, and more. This event is free and open to the public, and is happening on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 from 6:30pm – 8:30pm at GLAAD’s office. Mathew Rodriguez<\/a> is a queer, Latino, New York city-based award-winning journalist, essayist and activist. He is currently a staff writer for Mic and the former community editor for TheBody.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Alex Berg<\/a> is a bisexual<\/a> and queer video<\/a> producer and on-air talent at The Huffington Post. She hosts segments about LGBTQ and social justice issues, and produces videos<\/a> on national news, feminism, and race. Eliel Cruz<\/a> is the Executive Director of Faith In America, an organization dedicated to ending religious-based bigotry towards LGBT people.<\/p>\n

Bryan J. Ellicott<\/a> is a trans<\/a> and bi<\/a> advocate who, in recent years, brought a lawsuit<\/a> against the city of New York for anti-transgender discrimination. He is an executive board member of both SIDA (Staten Island Democratic Association) and SDNYC (Stonewall Democrats of New York City), and a board member of BiNet USA<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ashley C. Ford<\/a> is a writer, editor, and public speaker. Currently, she is also writing a memoir, and co-editing the anthology Not That Bad: Dispatches from Rape Culture<\/em> with Roxane Gay. Ford has written or guest-edited for The Guardian, ELLE, BuzzFeed,Slate, I-D, Lenny Letter, Matter, Design*Sponge, and various other web and print publications.<\/p>\n

Denarii Monroe’s<\/a> writing has been featured in Everyday Feminism, Black Girl Dangerous, Ravishly, Wear Your Voice Mag, and others. Most of her decade-long advocacy work has been rooted in student activism, with a focus on intersectional LGBTQIA+ issues.<\/p>\n

#BiWeek was created 3 years ago by GLAAD, BiNet USA, and others to accelerate acceptance of the bi<\/a>+ community. #BiWeek draws attention to the public policy concerns, while also celebrating the resiliency of, the bisexual<\/a> community. Many within the bi<\/a> community often face underreported or unreported issues and challenges; from health disparities to physical violence, anxiety, depression, poverty, and more, and at a higher rate than their gay<\/a>, lesbian<\/a>, and straight peers. BiWeek aims to increase visibility, education, and awareness of the bi<\/a> community’s needs, as well as its many achievements, collectively and individually.Throughout #BiWeek, allies and bi<\/a>+ people learn about the history, culture, community and current policy priorities of bi<\/a>+ communities.<\/p>\n
