NEW MUSIC: Blood Orange, Bat For Lashes, Dexys<\/b><\/p>\n

This week in New Music: a political-pop classic from Blood Orange<\/strong> aka Dev Hynes<\/strong>, Natasha Khan goes full concept on Bat For Lashes<\/strong> fourth album The Bride<\/em> and Dexys<\/strong> release an odd but wonderful collection of “country” and Irish “traditional” covers.<\/p>\n

Blood Orange – <\/b>Freetown Sound<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\"bloodorangefreetown<\/a>As <\/span>Test Icicles<\/b> and <\/span>Lightspeed Champion<\/b>, <\/span>Dev Hynes<\/b> (above) was always interesting and often exhilarating. With <\/span>Blood Orange<\/b> – via collaborations with the likes of <\/span>FKA Twigs<\/b> and <\/span>Sky Ferreira <\/b>– he seemingly found his voice. <\/span><\/p>\n

Freetown Sound<\/span><\/i>, his third album as Blood Orange, is highly personal, overtly political and startlingly accomplished mashup of R&B, jazz, pop funk and spoken word interludes. On “Hands Up” he references the murder of Trayvon Martin in Florida: “Keep your hood off when you’re walking….Sure enough, they’re gonna take your body.” All of this while going full Michael Jackson<\/b> on tracks like “But You” and “Thank You.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It has been compared with <\/span>Kendrick Lamar<\/b>’s <\/span>To Pimp a Butterfly<\/span><\/i>. Add to that the classic 80s pop stylings of <\/span>Prince<\/b> and <\/span>Janet Jackson<\/b> with a touch of <\/span>Lauryn Hill<\/b>’s <\/span>The Miseducation Of…<\/span><\/i> and you have – in Hynes’ own words – an album “for everyone told they’re not black enough, too black, too queer, not queer the right way, the underappreciated.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Add in <\/span>Nelly Furtado<\/b> on “Hadron Collider” and <\/span>Deborah Harry<\/b> on “EVP” and you have a pop classic.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n

Bat For Lashes – <\/b>The Bride<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\"Bat<\/a>As <\/span>Bat For Lashes<\/b>, <\/span>Natasha Khan<\/b>’s fourth album <\/span>The Bride<\/span><\/i> is a concept piece, a collection of torch songs telling the story of a woman<\/a> whose fiancé dies before their wedding.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I Do,” “Honeymooning Alone,” “Widow’s Peak,” “I Will Love Again,” “In Your Bed”….this could be torturous but in Khan’s hands <\/span>The Bride<\/span><\/i> is a menacing, inspired and sometimes intense collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Dexys – Let the Record Show<\/em>: <\/em>Dexys Do Irish and Country Soul<\/i><\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Dexys<\/a>It’s a sad, sad thing that <\/span>Dexys Midnight Runners<\/b> are forever to be remembered for 1982 dad-dancing disco filler “Come On Eileen.” While still a fantastic pop song 34 years later – frontman <\/span>Kevin Rowland<\/b> has said he knew it would be a massive, <\/span>massive<\/span><\/i> hit even before he finished writing it – the song has overshadowed everything the band has done since and had released before.<\/span><\/p>\n

Too Tye Ay<\/span><\/i>, the album from which “Come On Eileen” came is – deep breath – one of the best albums <\/span>ever<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now working as <\/span>Dexys<\/b>, <\/span>One Day I’m Going To Soar<\/span><\/i> felt like the follow-up that <\/span>Too Rye Ay<\/span><\/i> deserved. Working for themselves now, Kevin Rowland and co’s <\/span>Dexys Do Irish and Country Soul<\/span><\/i> does exactly what it says. With violinist <\/span>Helen O’Hara<\/b> back for the first time in 31 years, it feels like the moment that Dexys Midnight Runners would have naturally come to if they hadn’t split. <\/span><\/p>\n

It’s idiosyncratic and a touch odd (see <\/span>Joni Mitchell<\/b> cover “Both Sides Now”) but others like “I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen,” “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” and “Carrickfergus” would bring a tear to the eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
