{"id":38934,"date":"2016-06-08T18:20:50","date_gmt":"2016-06-08T22:20:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/jim-obergefell-explains-how-his-brief-marriage-helped-fuel-the-fight-for-equality-watch\/"},"modified":"2016-06-08T18:20:50","modified_gmt":"2016-06-08T22:20:50","slug":"jim-obergefell-explains-how-his-brief-marriage-helped-fuel-the-fight-for-equality-watch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/jim-obergefell-explains-how-his-brief-marriage-helped-fuel-the-fight-for-equality-watch\/","title":{"rendered":"Jim Obergefell Explains How His Brief Marriage Helped Fuel the Fight for Equality: WATCH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Jim Obergefell Explains How His Brief Marriage Helped Fuel the Fight for Equality: WATCH<\/b><\/p>\n<p>One&nbsp;important marriage that fueled the fight for the freedom&nbsp;to marry only lasted for three months and 11 days.<\/p>\n<p>Former realtor and IT consultant Jim Obergefell became an &ldquo;accidental activist,&rdquo; as he likes to <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=grq0&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">call<\/a> himself, when he decided to marry his partner of 20 years, John Arthur, in 2013.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.towleroad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/obergefell.jpg?resize=195%2C195\" alt=\"obergefell\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"> Arthur had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis&nbsp;(ALS), a nervous system disease that weakens muscles and impacts physical function, and in less than two years he was already confined to bed with not much time left to <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=grq0&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">live<\/a>. Obergefell wanted his name on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.towleroad.com\/2013\/10\/johnarthur\/\" target=\"_blank\">Arthur&rsquo;s death certificate as the surviving spouse, a&nbsp;request&nbsp;the state of Ohio, where same-sex marriage was illegal at the time, opposed.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>They had already been together for 20 years, but they always said they would only tie the knot when marriage had actual legal weight. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.towleroad.com\/2013\/06\/ediepride\/\">After the 2013 Supreme Court ruling that struck down the Defense of Marriage Act,<\/a>&nbsp;Obergefell finally proposed. Because of Arthur&rsquo;s advanced ALS state, they had to take an ambulance to the airport, and then fly on a medical jet to Maryland, where marriage was legal.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur died three months later. After his death they got what they wanted: Obergefell&rsquo;s name was listed as the surviving spouse, but the state of Ohio appealed to a higher court and won.<\/p>\n<p>Obergefell then appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, and the rest is history. He became the named plaintiff in a consolidated appeals case which the Supreme Court agreed to hear; a case that later&nbsp;became synonym with same-<a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/couples\/?mp_code=akftr\">sex<\/a> marriage: <i>Obergefell v. Hodges.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Almost one year after that historic ruling, Obergefell is now telling the story of the lovers, lawyers and judges who made the legalization of same-<a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/couples\/?mp_code=akftr\">sex<\/a> marriage possible.
