First trans<\/a> woman<\/a> elected to Venezuelan National Assembly<\/b><\/p>\n

Tamara Adrián became the first trans<\/a> woman<\/a> elected to Venezuelan National Assembly today when she won her seat during the elections held there on Sunday, December 6, 2015.<\/p>\n

Adrian is a lawyer, a professor at two universities and is the coordinator for issues that impact LGBT people for her party..  <\/p>\n

The Venezuelan government does not officially recognize her transition so her old name appeared on the ballot, but Adrian had addressed this in many interviews during which she also talked about her concerns for the country’s economy. This is her second run for office, she previously ran for a seat on the country’s Supreme Court. She will join a class of 167 new assembly members that were elected this Sunday.
