{"id":27854,"date":"2015-11-13T00:20:13","date_gmt":"2015-11-13T05:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/claremont-mckenna-dean-resigns-following-protests-hunger-strike\/"},"modified":"2015-11-13T00:20:13","modified_gmt":"2015-11-13T05:20:13","slug":"claremont-mckenna-dean-resigns-following-protests-hunger-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/claremont-mckenna-dean-resigns-following-protests-hunger-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"Claremont McKenna Dean Resigns Following Protests, Hunger Strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Claremont McKenna Dean Resigns Following Protests, Hunger Strike<\/b><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Claremont McKenna College dean of students resigned Thursday following criticism over her response to student complaints of racism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Mary Spellman, who had been the focus of protests this week calling for her resignation, said in a statement that she was stepping down&nbsp;&#8220;with sadness beyond words.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Students had accused Spellman and her office of failing to effectively respond to multiple incidents of racism and hate speech in recent years at the liberal arts school&#8217;s campus outside Los Angeles.&nbsp;At least one student had begun a hunger strike, demanding Spellman&#8217;s ouster.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span>The activism came to a head this month after Spellman sent&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=972800379428626&amp;set=p.972800379428626&amp;type=3&amp;permPage=1\" target=\"_blank\">an email <\/a><span> to a Latina student,&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/tsl.news\/person\/1099\/\">Lisette Espinosa<\/a><span>,&nbsp;promising to better serve students &#8220;who don&rsquo;t fit our CMC mold.&#8221; Spellman later apologized, but the email circulated widely and added to simmering tension.&nbsp;Spellman couldn&#8217;t be reached for comment after her resignation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>A photo posted on Facebook over the weekend of students wearing offensive Halloween costumes &#8212; after an extensive campaign advising students not to do so &#8212; fueled demonstrations and demands for action at a student government meeting on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In response, <span>CMC President Hiram Chodosh on Wednesday&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmc.edu\/news\/message-outlining-action-steps-for-diversity-support\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;steps to address concerns, including two new leadership positions on diversity, a review of the student affairs office, plans to facilitate forums on race and the creation of &#8220;programming space to support campus climate (identity, diversity, and free speech).&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But students said Chodosh promised eight months ago to create a hub for marginalized students, and nothing happened.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;There is a lot of distrust among marginalized students and the administration,&#8221; senior Jincy Varughese told The Huffington Post.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Taylor Lemmons, a junior who <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@tlemmons\/dear-claremont-mckenna-college-community-1861eb1fe846\" target=\"_blank\">announced Wednesday <\/a>afternoon that she would go on a hunger strike until Spellman resigned, described bias on campus as &#8220;unavoidable.&#8221;&nbsp;In classrooms, for example, Lemmons said there&#8217;s often a fear of&nbsp;&#8220;not being sure if your voice is being heard or valued as much as someone else because of the color of your skin or economic background.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Lemmons said she spoke with Spellman in what she called &#8220;a powerful moment&#8221; after announcing the hunger strike.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She said she respected the movement and respected what we were trying to do,&#8221; Lemmons said of the conversation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span>The Halloween picture was posted on Facebook by<\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/casey.garcelon?fref=nf\" target=\"_blank\" data-hovercard=\"\/ajax\/hovercard\/user.php?id=100003801058515&amp;extragetparams=%7B%22fref%22%3A%22nf%22%7D\">Casey Garcelon<\/a><span>, a student who said she was offended by the<\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span><span>mariachi-style costumes worn by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fresherthanyouheaux.tumblr.com\/post\/132901657710\/claremont-mckenna-college\" target=\"_blank\">women in the photo.&nbsp;<\/a>One of the <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/?mp_code=akftr\">women<\/a> in the photo contacted Garcelon to<span>&nbsp;apologize and ask that the picture be taken down, but Garcelon declined. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cmcforum.com\/news\/11102015-racially-insensitive-halloween-costumes-spur-discussion-online-in-student-senate\" target=\"_blank\">An article in the CMC Forum<\/a><span>, a student news outlet, said a college administrator also tried unsuccessfully to persuade Garcelon to remove the photo.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div data-type=\"embed-asset\" data-provider=\"Embed\" data-title=\"\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=691388034331225&amp;set=a.176388972497803.44973.100003801058515&amp;type=3\" data-width=\"500\">\n<div>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=691388034331225&amp;set=a.176388972497803.44973.100003801058515&amp;type=3\">\n<p>Dear Claremont community, For anyone who ever tries to invalidate the experiences of POC at the Claremont Colleges,&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Posted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/gay-voices\/#\" role=\"button\">Casey Garcelon<\/a> on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=691388034331225&amp;set=a.176388972497803.44973.100003801058515&amp;type=3\">Sunday, November 8, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The j<span>unior class president,&nbsp;<span>Kris Brackmann, who was among four other students in the photo, but wasn&#8217;t wearing a mariachi costume,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/imgur.com\/a\/bpQph\" target=\"_blank\">apologized<\/a> for associating herself with disrespectful costumes and resigned her office.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The photo provided further basis for students of color to talk publicly about hostility they said they experience on campus.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;The case before was it was largely happening behind closed doors, in spaces that were limited to the groups that were being affected,&#8221; said Chris Humphries, a sophomore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Students demonstrated on Wednesday to repeat <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/19BRi1esJ4rlzBLHAQEBHSl7e0wrEiUtLsF5eRdl90No\/edit\" target=\"_blank\">demands that <\/a>administrators address earlier incidents, including photos <a href=\"http:\/\/tsl.news\/opinions\/4851\/\" target=\"_blank\">of slaves in Facebook invitations<\/a> to a pirate-themed party, complaints by students of color that they were spat at and peed on at parties, vandalism of Queer Resource Center posters with anti-<a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=R2Xc&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">gay<\/a> language, vandalism of Black Lives Matter posters, and a student activist&#8217;s contention he was called <a href=\"http:\/\/tsl.news\/articles\/2013\/3\/15\/news\/3757-sjp-denounces-ongoing-investigation-complaint-names-professor\/\" target=\"_blank\">a &#8220;cockroach&#8221;
