Utah judge removes child from foster parents because they are lesbians<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

A judge in Utah has taken a baby girl<\/a> from her foster parents simply because they are lesbians<\/a>.<\/p>\n

April Hoagland and Beckie Peirce of Carbon County are married with two children, and hoped to adopt a the one-year-old girl<\/a> they had been fostering for three months.<\/p>\n

However, Judge Scott Johansen on Wednesday (11 November) ordered the Department of Child and Family Services to remove the child from their care within seven days.<\/p>\n

Johansen cited studies suggesting children are better off in straight households, but Hoagland and Beckie feel the judge imposed his religious beliefs on them.<\/p>\n

‘We are shattered,’ Hoagland told KUTV<\/a>. ‘It hurts me really badly because I haven’t done anything wrong.’<\/p>\n

‘He’s never been in our home, never spent time with the child in our home or our other children so he doesn’t know anything about this,’ Peirce addded.<\/p>\n

The Human Rights Campaign noted the prevailing professional consensus is that the sexual orientation of parents has nothing to do with their ability to be good parents.<\/p>\n

‘Removing a child from a loving home simply because the parents are LGBT is outrageous, shocking, and unjust,’ said the group’s president, Chad Griffin, in a statement.<\/p>\n

‘It also flies in the face of overwhelming evidence that children being raised by same-sex<\/a> parents are just as healthy and well-adjusted as those with different-sex<\/a> parents. At a time when so many children in foster care need loving homes, it is sickening to think that a child would be taken from caring parents who planned to adopt.’<\/p>\n
