{"id":24188,"date":"2015-08-15T10:15:15","date_gmt":"2015-08-15T14:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/melbourne-rallies-for-marriage-equality\/"},"modified":"2015-08-15T10:15:15","modified_gmt":"2015-08-15T14:15:15","slug":"melbourne-rallies-for-marriage-equality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/melbourne-rallies-for-marriage-equality\/","title":{"rendered":"Melbourne rallies for marriage equality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Melbourne rallies for marriage equality<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Thousands participated in a rally in Melbourne today to increase pressure on the government for marriage equality.<\/p>\n<p>Protestors stood outside the state library and listened to speeches from politicians and activists, including leader of the opposition Bill Shorten.<\/p>\n<p>Shorten said: &lsquo;They [right-wing liberals] are holding Australia back.<\/p>\n<p>&lsquo;It should not be the case that people are treated as second class citizens merely because of who they love.&rsquo;<\/p>\n<p>He said he disagreed with holding a conscience vote, as it would merely &lsquo;tell us what we know&rsquo; &ndash; the country is already in favor of marriage equality.<\/p>\n<p>&lsquo;That will be a $150 million taxpayer-funded opinion poll to tell us what we know, we want marriage equality now,&rsquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p>In July,&nbsp;Shorten said his Labour party would pass a marriage equality bill before 100 days of their government.<\/p>\n<p>A Galaxy 2009-2012 poll found 64% of people in the country were in favor of marriage equality &ndash; three-quarters said they thought some amendment of the current laws regarding marriage was &lsquo;inevitable&rsquo;.<\/p>\n<p>The group of about 2500 people according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/national\/2015\/08\/15\/16\/18\/shorten-and-bandt-slam-abbott-inaction-at-melbourne-same-sex-marriage-rally#7VeH2zOCOUfstgud.99\" target=\"_blank\">Nine News<\/a> then went to a mass wedding (although of course the marriages are not recognized by the Australian government).<\/p>\n<p>The rally was organized by Equal Love, an Australian marriage equality campaign group.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gaystarnews.com\/article\/melbourne-rallies-for-marriage-equality\/\">Melbourne rallies for marriage equality<\/a> appeared first on <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gaystarnews.com\/\">Gay Star News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Flanagan<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gaystarnews.com\/article\/melbourne-rallies-for-marriage-equality\/\" class=\"autohyperlink\">www.gaystarnews.com\/article\/melbourne-rallies-for-marriage-equality\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Melbourne rallies for marriage equality Thousands participated in a rally in Melbourne today to increase pressure on the government for marriage equality.
