Thomas Roberts becomes first out gay<\/a> news anchor on network TV<\/b><\/p>\n

Thomas Roberts became the first openly gay<\/a> anchor of an evening newscast on a major US TV network on Saturday (18 July) night when he hosted NBC’s Nightly News.<\/p>\n

Roberts, 42, tweeted that it was ‘quite a big honor.’<\/p>\n

He hosts MSNBC Live With Thomas Roberts as well as OutThere, a weekly online show about LGBTI issues.<\/p>\n

The veteran journalist came out in 2006 when it was still considered career suicide to do so and married his partner in 2012.<\/p>\n

There are a few openly gay<\/a> evening news anchors on cable TV – notably MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon – but Roberts is the first for one of the big three networks.<\/p>\n
