The Mistress<\/b><\/p>\n

\"The<\/a><\/p>\n

Isn’t she lovely, “the Mistress”?
\nWith her wide-apart grey-green eyes,
\nThe droop of her lips and, when she smiles,
\nHer glance of amused surprise?<\/p>\n

How nonchalantly she wears her clothes,
\nHow expensive they are as well!
\nAnd the sound of her voice is as soft and deep
\nAs the Christ Church tenor bell.<\/p>\n

But why do I call<\/a> her “the Mistress”
\nWho know not her way of life?
\nBecause she has more of a cared-for air
\nThan many a legal wife.<\/p>\n

How elegantly she swings along
\nIn the vapoury incense veil;
\nThe angel choir must pause in song
\nWhen she kneels at the altar rail.<\/p>\n

The parson said that we shouldn’t stare
\nAround when we come to church,
\nOr the Unknown God we are seeking
\nMay forever elude our search.<\/p>\n

But I hope that the preacher will not think
\nIt unorthodox and odd
\nIf I add that I glimpse in “the Mistress”
\nA hint of the Unknown God
