Queer Brazilian model and actress Barbie Ferreira has emerged as a major body positivity and queer visibility advocate in the tail end of this decade, both because of her curvaceous fashion shoots and her role as Kat Hernandez, the unapologetically sexual \u201cfat girl<\/a>\u201d in Sam Levinson\u2019s HBO teen<\/a> drama series Euphoria<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Barbie Ferreira has since become a groundbreaking force for large-bodied queers in pop-culture. So let\u2019s take a look at her rise and how she went from a body positivity model to one of the most intriguing characters in Sam Levinson\u2019s Euphoria<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Social media helped launch Barbie Ferreira\u2019s start as a body positivity model<\/h2>\n

Barbie Ferreira was born in New York City and started doing theatre at age 7. By age 10, she knew she wanted to be an actress. The larger-bodied child of a Brazilian mother, Ferreira initially experienced body dysmorphia during her early teen<\/a> years. She woukd read pro-anorexia \u201cthinspo blogs\u201d and worried that she might not be cast because of her larger size.<\/p>\n

Ferreira began posting images of herself on Instagram and Tumblr and at age 16, she began to send some of the images to American Apparel, eventually becoming one of the company\u2019s curvier models. She then gained serious web notoriety as a model for American Eagle\u2019s Aerie loungewear brand due to the campaign\u2019s unretouched photos showing her voluptuous belly and thighs.<\/p>\n

Her participation in both the campaign and its subsequent interview circuit landed her on TIME<\/em>\u2018s 30 Most Influential Teens of 2016 list<\/a>. Around then, she told Time<\/em> magazine<\/a> that she hoped to normalize the appearance of \u201ccurvy\u201d and \u201cplus-size\u201d models and she also criticized high-end fashion brands<\/a> for only catering to \u201cwhite, cis, tall, thin people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to be like, \u2018This isn\u2019t real life.\u2019 There\u2019s no reason to have these standards,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople are really sick of traditions, like thinness or whiteness. My one whole thing is: If you\u2019re a young person, create. That\u2019s how we\u2019re going to change it from the ground up. Change isn\u2019t going to happen by showing one \u2018different\u2019 model once in a campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Euphoria<\/em>, Barbie Ferreira plays Kat Hernandez, a sarcastic teen<\/a> and \u201cfat girl<\/a>\u201d (Ferreira\u2019s words) who reclaims her own sense of body positivity after being humiliated twice over. When her first boyfriend dumps her for gaining weight while on vacation, Kat escapes into the online world and becomes a popular fan-fiction writer, achieving viral status after penning an imagined sex scene between Harry Styles and <\/a>Louis Tomlinson<\/a> of the boy<\/a> band One Direction.<\/p>\n

After Kat\u2019s first sexual experience gets secretly recorded and shared online for her classmates and everyone else to see, she\u2019s initially embarrassed. However, when she sees how many commenters find her sexy, she reinvents herself as a web-cam<\/a> girl<\/a> and financial dominatrix who sports a cat mask and a newfound confidence.<\/p>\n

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>, Barbie Ferreira says that below Kat Hernandez\u2019s sexy online person is an insecure teen<\/a> who still sees herself as an unattractive outsider. \u201c[By becoming the object of desire she\u2019s never been \u2014 especially in this seedy [webcam world] that\u2019s also inherently sexy and taboo \u2014 it just all plays into her need to be anonymous online and get validation from it,\u201d<\/p>\n

In another interview<\/a>, Ferreira said that some Euphoria<\/em>\u00a0viewers don\u2019t like Kat Hernandez\u2019s groundbreaking depiction of a larger-bodied, Latinx girl<\/a> exploring her sexuality because, \u201cPeople are not used to seeing bigger girls<\/a> have their own life, their own shit.\u201d<\/p>\n

In my private life, it\u2019s been going on for a long time. I obviously don\u2019t really identify as a straight woman<\/a> ever in my life, but I feel like now I\u2019m really in my queerness. Since coming out as queer, she\u00a0has worried about her queerness being co-opted as a marketing gimmick, just as some brands have done with body positivity. \u201cModeling,\u201d she said, \u201cfelt like my physical body was a prop.\u201d After being asked about body positivity in nearly every interview she did, she got tired of her identity being boiled down to just one physical aspect.
