Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Matt Gay has been taunted and teased his entire life for his name and he\u2019s finally decided enough is enough.<\/p>\n

On Sunday\u2019s game against the Indianapolis Colts, 25-year-old Gay, who, for the record, is not\u00a0<\/em>gay<\/a>, wore special anti-bullying cleats to send a message of solidarity with LGBTQ people and others who have been subject to bullying.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so easy to hide behind a phone and say whatever you want,\u201d he told the Tampa Bay Times<\/a><\/em>\u00a0prior to the game. \u201cI think it\u2019s pure coward-ism for those who do it and there\u2019s no place for it in this world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI got bullied and teased all the time for my last name and things like that. Luckily I was stronger willed than they were and overcome it. There\u2019s a lot of kids that get bullied in this world and have no way to stand up for themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of the messages I receive, it\u2019s almost like people forget you\u2019re an actual human being,\u201d Gay said. \u201cThat you\u2019re sending this to another person. It\u2019s easy when you\u2019re sitting behind a phone and not face to face with someone and can say whatever you want.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cBut you don\u2019t know it\u2019s affecting that person, it\u2019s affecting the mom and those that are around them. Just being able to show a little faith in humanity and love everyone. We\u2019re all struggling through life. There\u2019s no reason to beat somebody down for no reason.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Gay chose to wear the cleats as part of the NFL \u201cMy Cause, My Cleats campaign,\u201d which has players decorate their shoes to show support for a cause they personally believe in.<\/p>\n
