Call Me By Your Name<\/em><\/h3>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t like Call Me By Your Name<\/em>. I mean, it was beautifully shot and well-acted. The monologue by Elio\u2019s father at the end was a lovely piece of scripting. But I found it needlessly longwinded, dull, and in parts downright peculiar. Considering it\u2019s set during the early \u201880s, I thought not even mentioning HIV and AIDS was odd. I also found Armie Hammer \u2014 who I do rate as an actor, generally \u2014 utterly unconvincing as a 24-year-old. It was like\u2026 come on, guys<\/a>. This dude\u2019s 30-plus and looks it. Which makes his entanglement with a 17-year-old \u2014 and again I\u2019m conscious that in the plot Elio does most of the pursuing \u2014 feel somewhat ickier than it was probably intended to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Birdcage<\/em> and The Kids Are All Right<\/em><\/h3>\n

\u201cThis might be a bit random, but I hate<\/em> when movies have a gay<\/a> character that can turn \u2018straight,\u2019 especially when convenient for the plot. Like in The Birdcage<\/em>, Armand had sex<\/a> with a woman<\/a> just to see what \u2018straight guys<\/a> raved about\u2019 or whatever. Or in The Kids Are All Right<\/em>, the whole premise of that movie is a lesbian<\/a> cheating on her wife for a man<\/a>, even though she says she\u2019s gay<\/a>. We don\u2019t just turn like that, goddammit<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moonlight<\/em><\/h3>\n

\u201cI had trouble with Moonlight<\/em>. Great script and acting, but it bothered me how it was portrayed as groundbreaking. Show me a gay<\/a> sex<\/a> scene as opposed to an off-camera<\/a> handjob, and then we\u2019ll talk about groundbreaking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brokeback Mountain<\/em><\/h3>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t like that movie when it came out. I was still firmly in the closet and looking forward to a mainstream gay<\/a> movie hitting the theaters, but when I eventually saw it, I just couldn\u2019t fathom what people saw in it. The relationship between the characters was so toxic and destructive. The indulgent nature-shots slowed the movie down to a crawl, and one of the main characters died at the end (a fate shared by far too many queer characters in cinema). Even after rewatching it in university, I couldn\u2019t sit through all of it because of how damn boring it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToo sanguine about the coming out process. I shudder to think of the teens<\/a> who watched it, got false impressions, came out, and then were kicked out of the house, sent to gay<\/a> rehab, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pretty much all of them<\/h3>\n

\u201cI have pretty much hated all of them except Fourth Man Out<\/em>, which actually had a decent, believable storyline not fraught with conflict and despair. Brokeback<\/em> was terribly boring and depressing, as was God\u2019s Own Country<\/em>. 99% of gay<\/a>-themed movies focus on cliche and stereotypes. There is always crippling conflict and heartbreak because they are gay<\/a>. I don\u2019t want to watch a movie that depresses me or focuses on \u2019the struggle\u2019 of being gay<\/a>. Give me a movie where the main character is gay<\/a> but that isn\u2019t the coolest thing about him. Make the movie about solving crime or something. Instead of the guy<\/a> solving the case and winning the beautiful girl<\/a>, give him a guy<\/a> instead. Being gay<\/a> shouldn\u2019t define your life, or a movie. It can be an important part, but not the focus.\u201d<\/p>\n
