Coldplay\u2019s Chris Martin Once Thought He Might Be Gay and it Changed His Mind About God<\/b><\/p>\n

Coldplay\u2019s Chris Martin sat down for a lengthy interview with Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> founder and editorial director Jann Wenner. One of the topics they covered was Martin\u2019s religious upbringing and how it affected him during a time he was questioning his sexual orientation. Martin said his earlier beliefs about God were very \u201cman<\/a> with a beard in the sky\u201d who was very punitive, and were later influenced by evangelical Christianity. This prompted a lot of conflict when he began questioning if he was gay<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Said Martin: \u201cWhen I went to boarding school I walked a bit funny and I bounced a bit and I was also very homophobic because I was like, \u2018If I\u2019m gay<\/a>, I\u2019m completely f**ked for eternity\u2019 and I was a kid discovering sexuality. [I thought to myself], \u2018Maybe I\u2019m gay<\/a>, maybe I\u2019m this, maybe I\u2019m that, I can\u2019t be this\u2019 so I was terrified. And then I walked a bit funny and I was in a boarding school with a bunch of quite hardcore kids who were also gone for their thing and, for a few years, they were very much like, \u2018You\u2019re definitely gay<\/a>,\u2019 in quite a full-on manner, quite aggressively telling me that and it was weird for me for a few years\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked Wenner: \u201cDid you think you were gay<\/a>?\u201d<\/p>\n

Replied Martin: \u201c[I thought to myself], \u2018I don\u2019t know and even if I am, I can\u2019t be because it\u2019s wrong\u2026 If I am, I can\u2019t be\u2019 so that was creating a terrible turmoil\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked Wenner: \u201cDid [the kids] convince you that you were gay<\/a>?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI start to worry about it for sure,\u201d replied Martin. \u201cAbout 15 and a half, I don\u2019t know what happened, but I was like, \u2018Yeah so what?\u2019 and then it all just stopped overnight. It was very interesting. Once I was like, \u2018Yeah, so what if I\u2019m gay<\/a>.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat stopped? Your worry, or the kids?\u201d asked Wenner.<\/p>\n

Replied Martin: \u201cThe worry and anyone teasing you and\u2026I don\u2019t know what it was. Maybe it was reading about Elton. I really don\u2019t remember. Maybe just growing up a bit and having a bit more exposure to the world thinking, \u2018A lot of my heroes are gay<\/a>\u2019 or whatever. Whatever they are, it doesn\u2019t really matter. So what that did was ease a big pressure and then made me question, \u2018Hey maybe some of this stuff that I\u2019m learning about God and everything \u2014 I\u2019m not sure if I subscribe to all of this particular religion\u2019\u2026 So for a few years that was a bit wobbly and then eventually I just was like, \u2018Okay, I think I have my own relationship with what I think God is and it\u2019s not really any one religion for me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
