Zambia angered by US ambassador\u2019s \u2018horror\u2019 at its treatment of gay<\/a> men<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

The government of Zambia has said it intends to write a letter to Washington to complain about the US ambassador meddling in their country\u2019s internal affairs.<\/p>\n

The diplomatic spat has come over the country\u2019s treatment of its gay<\/a> citizens. Last week, the High Court in Zambia sentenced two men<\/a> to 15 years imprisonment for having gay<\/a> sex<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Yes, you read that correctly: 15 years.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Zambia offers no legal protections to LGBTQ citizens. It retains Colonial-era laws outlawing gay<\/a> sex<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The men<\/a> were arrested in 2017. They\u2019d been caught in a room at a lodge they\u2019d booked in Kapiri Mposhi, central Zambia. A female<\/a> worker at the lodge said she\u2019d seen what the men<\/a> were doing through an open window. She then called over colleagues to also witness what was going on in the room.<\/p>\n

A magistrate\u2019s court found the men<\/a> guilty of sex<\/a> \u201cagainst the order of nature\u201d last year. The men<\/a> appealed to the High Court.<\/p>\n

However, in its ruling last week, that court backed up the magistrate\u2019s court\u2019s verdict, with the judge, Charles Zulu, saying<\/a>, \u201cThe trial court cannot be faulted and there is no basis to review or substitute the conviction and I further find that there were no irregularities by the trial court.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sentencing of the men<\/a> has been met with international condemnation. Among those to criticize the sentence was US ambassador, Daniel Foote. When asked at a press conference last week what he thought of the case, he said he was \u201chorrified.\u201d He implored the country to review the sentencing.<\/p>\n

Zambia receives hundreds of millions of dollars in financial aid from the US: No less than $4billion over the last 15 years, much of which goes to helping fight HIV\/AIDS.<\/p>\n

Asked by reporters if there was a chance the US might cut some of this aid, Foote diplomatically replied: \u201cI want to give the government of Zambia the opportunity to renew and rejuvenate its partnership with the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also took a swipe at the Zambian government, saying the men<\/a>\u2019s relationship hurt nobody, while at the same time, \u201cgovernment officials can steal millions of public dollars without prosecution.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a blistering statement<\/a> issued yesterday, Foote also said he\u2019d been subjected to hateful comments online since condemning the sentencing last week.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was shocked at the venom and hate directed at me and my country, largely in the name of \u2018Christian\u2019 values, by a small minority of Zambians. I thought, perhaps incorrectly, that Christianity meant trying to live<\/a> like our Lord, Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not qualified to sermonize, but I cannot imagine Jesus would have used bestiality comparisons or referred to his fellow human beings as \u2018dogs,\u2019 or \u2018worse than animals;\u2019 allusions made repeatedly by your countrymen and women<\/a> about homosexuals.<\/p>\n

\u201cTargeting and marginalizing minorities, especially homosexuals, has been a warning signal of future atrocities by governments in many countries. In my heart, I know that real Zambian values don\u2019t merit your country\u2019s inclusion on that list, ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, Zambian government officials have hit back. Associated Press<\/a> reports Zambia\u2019s foreign affairs minister, Joseph Malanji, as saying his government intends to send a protest letter to Washington over the remarks over the ambassador meddling in Zambia\u2019s internal affairs.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Sky News<\/a> yesterday, Zambian President Edgar Lungu also defended the court\u2019s decision, saying Zambian culture prohibited homosexuality. Lungu, a former lawyer, has often spoken out against gay<\/a> rights in the past.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you want to be tying your aid to homosexuality\u2026 If that is how you will bring your aid then I am afraid the West can leave us alone in our poverty,\u201d Lungu said.<\/p>\n
