Andy Mientus on starring in an old fashioned queer love story in \u2018Dolly Parton\u2019s Heartstrings\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n

We first met the actor on the red carpet for the premiere of\u00a0Dolly Parton\u2019s Heartstrings<\/em>,<\/a> the new heart-warming series of films based on Parton\u2019s work. It comes to Netflix this November 22. Mientus, conscious of his Appaliacian surroundings, dressed for the occasion: bolo tie and a black & white cowboy-style suit.<\/p>\n

Audiences will know the Pensylvania native from his tenure on <\/a>The Flash\u00a0<\/em>where he played the role of Harley Rathaway\/The Pied Piper,<\/a> an out-gay<\/a> supervillain. He\u2019s also appeared on series like\u00a0Gone, Chasing Life,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Smash<\/em>, as well as won attention for stage performances in musicals like Spring Awakening<\/em>. Never one to hide his queerness, Mientus got pubilicly engaged to his boyfriend Michael Arlen in 2014. The pair tied the knot two years later.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Dolly Parton\u2019s Heartstrings<\/em> marks Mientus\u2019 latest project on the screen. His episode pairs him with Dolly herself, as well as opposite Oscar-winner Melissa Leo (of\u00a0The Fighter<\/em>). Titled \u201c2 Doors Down\u201d (yes, from the Dolly Parton song), the story focuses on a young musician named Tyler who reunites with his family\u2013including his overbearing mother (played by Leo)\u2013for his sister\u2019s wedding. Little does Tyler\u2019s mother know, but he\u2019s actually living a happy life as a gay<\/a> man<\/a> in a major city. Tyler has also landed a handsome boyfriend named Cole (Michael J. Willett)\u2026who also happens to be the wedding planner.<\/p>\n

Queerty found some time to chat<\/a> with Mientus about the show, Ms. Parton and life as a queer performer.\u00a0Dolly Parton\u2019s Heartstrings\u00a0<\/em>arrives on Netflix November 22.<\/p>\n

So how do you go from being the Pied Piper to Heartstrings? <\/i>How did the job come to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s degrees of confidence. The thing I loved about Hartley [Pied Piper], and the thing I love about him still, is that he actually, in his backstory, has a tough time coming out and gets kicked out of his house for being gay<\/a>. You don\u2019t get to see that in his story, but I always imagined based on the way he his and the humor he has that he [was disowned by his family]. He has a lot more agency than that; he\u2019s confident in who he is and what he believes in. He becomes a supervillain because he\u2019s standing up to Harrison Wells [the head of STAR Labs] and tries to prevent the explosion that creates all these superheroes. He stands up for what he believes in.<\/p>\n

Awesome. So what about Ty, your Heartstrings<\/i> character?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tyler doesn\u2019t want to rock the boat. I don\u2019t think he\u2019s ashamed of who he is, but he\u2019s lived another life away from home, moving to a city. He is completely out and proud there, but doesn\u2019t want to rock the boat back home. The weekend is supposed to be about his sister\u2019s wedding. He wants to keep the peace.<\/p>\n

Sure.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

So it\u2019s the same queerness. It\u2019s the same identity, but a different belief in how one should put that out into the world. Hartley is take it or leave it. Tyler is just like I\u2019ll see what comes up<\/i>.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s really interesting the way you contrast and compare them. I\u2019ve seen your Heartstings <\/i>episode \u201c2 Doors Down\u201d twice now.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t seen it once yet!<\/p>\n

Really?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I still haven\u2019t seen it.<\/p>\n

Well it\u2019s very, very sweet and sentimental by design. Those aren\u2019t bad things; it\u2019s intended as such. But, when you approach a story like this, a kind of a story made for a conservative audience that doesn\u2019t know much about queer culture or life were you at all worried about how frankly the relationship would be portrayed?<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

No. First of all, I was just so thrilled that Dolly chose to include this story in a season of only eight episodes. It would be very easy to just not go there. So the fact that she\u2019s choosing one to include this, I was already on board. However we get into it, however deep we go, it\u2019s already a step for that fanbase. But then, in scene three, we have Tyler finally getting a moment alone with his boyfriend, and they have a kiss right on camera<\/a>, so I was like we\u2019re good<\/i>.<\/p>\n

And yes, you do see it presented with respect and tenderness.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not that the show is scared of telling this story, it\u2019s that the character is scared of coming out to his family. That\u2019s a totally real thing, and I would imagine, so many of my queer friends from Southern or Appalachian areas that grew up on Dolly: this was their experience. A lot of people from the Bible Belt very much have the experience that Tyler has. It seemed like the way the relationship would be portrayed was very realistic to friends I have from these areas.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Well let\u2019s talk about that. Tyler, your character, comes into conflict with his mom who seems to like gay<\/a> people, but thinks of us like magical little style elves.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That\u2019s absolutely right.<\/p>\n

[Laughter]<\/i><\/p>\n

I like to think our powers are much greater than that. But her attitude was quite pervasive at one point\u2014we\u2019re ok as long as we\u2019re not part of the family or wanting equal rights. In your experience what\u2019s that about?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I mean, who can say what the actual psychology is. I had a dinner once with a bunch of queer media people. Somebody who had worked toward getting marriage equality after Prop. 8 said something that fascinated me. The whole idea of \u201cLove is Love\u201d was a phrase that was decided upon by very<\/i> smart people. The message became \u201cWe\u2019re just like you with one little difference.\u201d Letting people come to the idea of accepting queerness in that way was a very deliberate choice. That blew my mind.<\/p>\n

Yeah.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m thinking about the first iteration of Queer Eye, <\/i>where it was these funny, sassy, very\u2026um\u2026<\/p>\n

Flamboyant?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah. These characters on TV making straight people\u2019s lives more fun. That was how a lot of people saw queerness for the first time. They weren\u2019t watching documentaries about Stonewall<\/a> or the Upstairs Lounge<\/a>. They were watching Will & Grace<\/i>. That\u2019s the way I think a lot of marginalized communities win people over\u2014entertaining them. It\u2019s obviously a bit reductive and doesn\u2019t begin to encapsulate all the different personalities within our community.<\/p>\n

Of course.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But it\u2019s a tactic that works. Entertainment, taste and culture tend to be undeniable and the first things to go beyond the borders of a marginalized community. Disarming people with entertainment is a way of easing them into something broader. It\u2019s something Dolly does in her podcast.<\/p>\n

Dolly Parton\u2019s America? <\/i>Yes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

She shies away from baldly political questions so as not to offend anybody. But in her life, she wrote 9 to 5<\/i>, which is a pretty political tune when you break down what she\u2019s saying. But it\u2019s entertaining, and that gets people comfortable with the idea of women<\/a> in the workplace standing up for themselves.<\/p>\n

You played the first out gay<\/a> supervillain, the Pied Piper on The Flash<\/i>. You\u2019ve played a number of other queer characters as well. When you play a role like that, do you worry about being associated too closely with it? Do you worry about typecasting, or how that will affect your career?<\/strong><\/p>\n

To me, that\u2019s not something that scares me. I\u2019m very vocal, and I always have been, about who I am. I enjoy being part of the community. I can\u2019t imagine not being able to wear something vivacious or being afraid of my femininity or not hold my husband\u2019s hand in public. It\u2019s not how I want to live<\/a> my life.<\/p>\n

Sure.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The idea of trying to not<\/i> play queerness doesn\u2019t interest me. If playing queer characters means I\u2019ll always play queer characters, then great. That\u2019s one less thing I have to worry about when I build a character.<\/p>\n

Oh really?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I don\u2019t have to worry about dropping my voice and controlling my mannerisms, and I can just sort of be myself and then<\/i> think about all the other things that I think about when building a character, it just takes a step out of the process. When I\u2019m worried about butching it up on camera<\/a>, it\u2019s a character on top of a character. I, the actor, Andy is trying to play a character that\u2019s trying to play a character. So it doesn\u2019t scare me.<\/p>\n

Right on.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m also a particular type of actor. I\u2019m not super-duper straight passing. I\u2019ve played straight people, and I hope to [in the future] but it\u2019s not like I\u2019m going to be an action hero kissing Megan Fox<\/a> and I\u2019ll f*ck that up by playing a lot of gay<\/a> people. I\u2019ve also been straddling stage and screen. I\u2019ve been a working actor for 10 years now. I\u2019m not in the place where I\u2019m going to say no to something because it\u2019s queer. As long as those roles are more layered than just \u201cthe gay<\/a> guy<\/a>\u2026\u201d I mean, that\u2019s when I pass. I don\u2019t want to be the butt<\/a> of a joke. I don\u2019t want to be making fun of something that\u2019s part of who I am.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the reception been within the business? Were you ever told, \u201cTone it down?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Luckily no. That\u2019s a combination of the time that I\u2019ve come up in the world. I\u2019m fortunate to be working when I\u2019m working. If I had started even five years before I came on the scene, it would have been quite different. But luckily, I\u2019m here now. Also, what I said before: I\u2019m not fooling anybody. I have a sensibility that announces my identity to the world. So it\u2019s just a natural fit. My reps are just interested in me working. Everyone has been really supportive.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve also been a strong advocate for bisexual<\/a> recognition: that being bi<\/a> doesn\u2019t mean you have something to hide. In the couple<\/a> of years since you really made a rallying cry, have you noticed a change?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah. We\u2019re definitely improving. There\u2019s more representation. In the last GLADD report<\/a>, bisexual<\/a> representation was up something like 30%. Which is amazing. I always talk about how I was confused for a long time. Not that I was afraid of feelings I was having, but I didn\u2019t have the language to put to what I was experiencing. The first time I ever heard the term \u201cbisexual<\/a>\u201d was on an episode of Friends<\/i> where Phoebe is singing a song\u2026<\/p>\n

I remember. This episode. Good lord.<\/strong><\/p>\n

She makes a joke about it, that they\u2019re kidding themselves. That was the first time. My little, 10-year-old brain just filed that away as a thing you can do that\u2019s a joke. The stereotype does come from real experience. For so many people it is a step along the way to a different identity. Everyone\u2019s <\/i>identity is a step along the way to another identity. My husband was an actor for many years. That led to being a director. You can only live<\/a> one life at a time. Then you figure out who you are.<\/p>\n

Right.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I do find it really curious and worth noting [that the stereotype] tends to be that bi<\/a> men<\/a> haven\u2019t accepted that they\u2019re gay<\/a>, and that a woman<\/a> is doing it for attention and she just hasn\u2019t found the right man<\/a>. It\u2019s always about men<\/a> and this patriarchal idea. It\u2019s hilarious.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re having so many conversations now culturally about identity and shades of identity as they relate to gender. I think the bisexual<\/a> questions come along with that. It\u2019s funny, in your wording of the question you said something about being outspoken.<\/p>\n

Yes?<\/strong><\/p>\n

And I\u2019m like\u2026am I?<\/i> To me, it doesn\u2019t feel political to talk about myself. It\u2019s funny that it\u2019s still rare enough that it\u2019s worth noting. That alone tells me that we\u2019re not \u201cthere\u201d yet.<\/p>\n

You worked with your husband, Michael Arden, directing you in Spring Awakening<\/i>. How does working with someone that you\u2019re emotionally involved with challenge you as an actor? Does it challenge your relationship?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m sure it is different for any relationship I have, if I was working with my best friend, or whatever. Fortunately, with Michael, I think we really see the world in the same way. We see art in the same way. We have similar tastes. We worked together on [Spring Awakening<\/i>] and then we recently worked together again on a music video<\/a>. And we\u2019re about to work together again. I\u2019m going to be associate director of a show he\u2019s directing in Atlanta.<\/p>\n

Oh wow.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So I\u2019ve been an actor on stage for him, an actor on camera<\/a> for him and now I\u2019m working as his associate in a directorial position. In all these cases we sort of turn off our relationship and just look at whatever we\u2019re making objectively. It\u2019s actually a really fun exercise. We\u2019re never tactile in the room. We\u2019re never affectionate. Whenever we\u2019re on a business call<\/a>, he introduces me as his associate. We\u2019re in that mode. It\u2019s really fun.<\/p>\n

Are the two of you competitive together?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When we first got together there were a couple<\/a> of months where we auditioning for the same thing. Now we\u2019re very different types, and he doesn\u2019t want to act. He doesn\u2019t go on auditions, he\u2019s kind of put it behind him. So no, it\u2019s better now because if I don\u2019t get a part that I really wanted, he\u2019s now a voice of reason from a directorial standpoint. He\u2019ll be like it\u2019s not about you. <\/i>He has this wisdom from another side of the business.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s interesting.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And I can remind him of the play involved. Directing can be quite technical. But I feel like I can remind him of the play of it all, so we\u2019re symbiotic in that way.<\/p>\n
