Dean Atta<\/a>, a writer named one of the most influential LGBT people in the UK by the Independent on Sunday<\/em> and dubbed \u201cone of the UK\u2019s finest poets\u201d by Time Out London<\/em>, contributed a poem titled \u201cHow to Come Out as Gay\u201d to this year\u2019s anthology Proud<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And in this PinkNews<\/em><\/a> video<\/a>, Attas reads his poem as The Black Flamingo, \u201ca character I\u2019ve created to celebrate being black and queer.\u201d (The Black Flamingo<\/em> is also the title of his debut novel<\/a>, published this August.)<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing black and queer means being doubly fabulous!\u201d he says with a laugh. \u201cBut also, the intersections of homophobia and racism do affect me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Dean<\/p>\n

He explains that he belongs to many communities he feels \u201cvery empowered by and supported by, where I found so much strength and see that so many people have struggled in order for me to stand proud as a black, gay<\/a> man<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, coming out was kinda incidental to liking a boy<\/a> and wanting to ask him out on a date or to be my boyfriend,\u201d he reveals. \u201cAnd I got rejected. He said no. But I was then out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thinking behind my poem \u2026 is advice I would give to my 15-year-old self. I wanted to send the message that there\u2019s no right way to come out or no right time to come out. It\u2019s just when you feel ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Here are more of Atta\u2019s words to the wise, transcribed from his reading of the poem:<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t come out unless you want to. Don\u2019t come out for anyone else\u2019s sake. Don\u2019t come out because you think society expects you to. Come out for yourself. Come out to yourself. Shout, sing it, softly stutter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing effeminate doesn\u2019t make you gay<\/a>. Being sensitive doesn\u2019t make you guy<\/a>. Being gay<\/a> makes you gay<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t worry: It\u2019s okay to say you\u2019re gay<\/a> and later exchange it for something that suits you, fits, feels better.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBe a bit gay<\/a>. Be very gay<\/a>. Be the glitter that shows up in unexpected places.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRemember, you have the right to be proud. Remember, you have the right to be you.\u201d<\/p>\n
