The anti-<a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">trans<\/a> ads reached Americans through many mediums and appear to have targeted electoral contests in Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Virginia. But despite the onslaught of ads, LGBTQ candidates like Danica Roem and pro-LGBTQ candidates like Andy Beshear were able to win their respective elections.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE ADS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nationwide<\/strong>: The same conservative PAC that is behind the Kentucky ads has cut a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/TCQ1KEIb4sE\">series<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fNqpkLX_shU\">of anti-trans spots<\/a>\u00a0that culminate in the message: \u201cOn Tuesday, November 5, vote against Democrats.\u201d It is unclear where these will air.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kentucky<\/strong>: A conservative PAC is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lgbtqnation.com\/2019\/09\/rightwing-pac-scare-mongering-trans-rights-kentucky-governors-election\/\">running ads<\/a>\u00a0claiming that that the Democratic candidate for governor, Andy Beshear, is threatening opportunities for cisgender <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/?mp_code=akftr\">females<\/a> athletes because he supports \u201ca competitor who claims they are a <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/?mp_code=akftr\">girl<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Louisiana<\/strong>: Ralph Abraham, GOP candidate for governor, is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/feature\/nbc-out\/louisiana-governor-s-race-ad-takes-aim-transgender-rights-n1045176\">running ads<\/a>\u00a0stating, \u201cas a doctor, I can assure you, there are only two genders.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mississippi<\/strong>: GOP candidate Tate Reeves has made anti-<a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">trans<\/a> comments,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/afaaction.net\/interviews-with-mississippi-candidates-for-governor\/\">insisting<\/a>\u00a0to the anti-LGBTQ American Family Association that <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">trans<\/a> rights would trample on religious freedom.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Donald Trump, Jr. used this anti-<a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">trans<\/a> rhetoric\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newnownext.com\/donald-trump-jr-transphobic-cbs-this-morning\/11\/2019\/\">just yesterday<\/a>, and anti-LGBTQ activists are likely to continue using this tactic into next year\u2019s critical 2020 elections. This anti-LGBTQ campaign is a similar strategy deployed by anti-LGBTQ activists\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/11\/04\/politics\/campaign\/samesex-marriage-issue-key-to-some-gop-races.html\">in the 2004 elections<\/a>, a successful effort which demonized marriage equality.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Trump Administration\u2019s incessant attacks on transgender Americans have effectively spread across the country in 2019 state elections, and the public should expect this tactic to be used during critical elections next year too,\u201d\u00a0<strong>said Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD\u2019s President &#038; CEO<\/strong>. \u201cThe assertions and misinformation in these ads have been debunked time and again, but this \u2018top-down\u2019 strategy by anti-LGBTQ activists will only be defeated when the community bands together and fights back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The anti-transgender dialogue comes as attacks on the <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">trans<\/a> community have skyrocketed. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/virginia-politics\/virginia-republicans-ad-ties-opponent-to-ms-13-democrats-compare-it-to-willie-horton\/2017\/09\/20\/28d673bc-9e49-11e7-8ea1-ed975285475e_story.html\">similar strategy<\/a>\u00a0was made by the Virginia Republican Party and its candidates, who used debunked ads about immigration days before the 2017 Virginia gubernatorial elections.<br \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With a president whose own anti-<a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">trans<\/a> record is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glaad.org\/trump\">clear<\/a>, statewide candidates are following the national party\u2019s lead and using transgender people as a way to get out the evangelical vote.<br \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHO\u2019S BEHIND THE ADS?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Kentucky, it\u2019s an organizational PAC called Campaign For American Principles, and in Louisiana and Mississippi, it is the Republican Party\u2019s candidates\u2019 own campaigns. However, the anti-<a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">trans<\/a> push is a mainstream political position that is supported by virtually every conservative group, the vast majority of GOP elected officials, and the current Trump Administration.\u00a0<strong><u>Which means we are more likely than not to see this push in GOP campaigns up and down the ticket across the nation through November 2020.<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>FACT VERSUS FICTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Below you will find the type of anti-transgender rhetoric that is surely to pop up in future political ads across the nation through the 2020 political cycle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Claim<\/em><\/strong><em>: There are only two genders.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Truth<\/strong>: Human biology is far more complex than a binary. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, and the American Psychiatric Association\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5432489\/transgender-definition-medicine\/\">all agree<\/a>\u00a0that gender identity\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.out.com\/health\/2019\/11\/05\/singular-they-pronoun-endorsed-american-psychological-association\">does not exist<\/a>\u00a0in a structured binary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Claim<\/em><\/strong><em>: Trans <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/?mp_code=akftr\">women<\/a> have an unfair advantage in sports.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Truth<\/strong>: This is false, and the so-called \u201cunfair advantage\u201d narrative developed only when transgender athletes began winning their competitions. As the NCAA states, there are about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-glorious-victories-of-trans-athletes-are-shaking-up-sports\/\">150 to 200 student athletes<\/a>\u00a0who identify as transgender. However, they have not received attention because they haven\u2019t won their matches. Organizations like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.athleteally.org\/tom-blunt-trans-women-sports\/\">Athlete Ally<\/a>\u00a0have also worked with scientists to confirm that a person\u2019s gender identity does not impact their performance as an athlete.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Claim<\/em><\/strong><em>: Trans rights threaten religious freedom.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Truth<\/strong>: The idea that <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">trans<\/a> people are in conflict with any law, policy, or statute is 100% built around transphobia.
