Ex-mayor hopes to clear his name after former staffer walks back sexual misconduct allegations<\/b><\/p>\n

Former Portland mayor Sam Adams says he\u2019s on a mission to clear his good name after an ex-staffer dragged him through the mud two years ago by making shocking sexual misconduct allegations that he has since walked back.<\/p>\n

In 2008, Adams became the first openly gay<\/a> person ever elected to be his city\u2019s mayor. He served from January 2009 through December 2012 before announcing he would not seek reelection, despite being a widely popular mayor.<\/p>\n

Then, in November 2017, Adams\u2019 openly gay<\/a> former assistant, Cevero Gonzalez, dropped a six-page bombshell account detailing alleged mistreatment he suffered at the hands of Adams while working as his executive assistant during his time in office.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Gonzalez alleged that Adams made obscene gestures, exposed his genitalia, spoke in graphic detail about his sexual exploits, and demanded Gonzalez share accounts of his own bedroom conquests, among other shocking accusations.<\/p>\n

One of the most damning allegations involved a time when Gonzalez picked up Adams from the airport and claimed the then-mayor \u201clightly grabbed at his crotch\u201d and said \u201cDon\u2019t be so uptight.\u201d<\/p>\n

It turns out, that never happened.<\/p>\n

Gonzalez walked back the story after the Willamette Week<\/a><\/em> reported last month that\u00a0\u201cin fact, emails Adams found show it was Adams\u2019 economic development aide, Clay Neal, not Gonzalez, who picked Adams up after his China trip, something Neal has confirmed.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

But it doesn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n

Gonzalez also walked back claims that Adams exposed himself on numerous occasions at work and that he propositioned him for sex<\/a>, saying instead that nothing Adams did was ever \u201csexual\u201d and that he\u00a0 \u201cnever propositioned him\u2014it was just inappropriate and uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, Adams tells local news station KGW<\/a> that the Willamette Week<\/em> article proves he was innocent all along, and that Gonzalez\u2019s allegations against him were totally 100% not true.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cThe Willamette Week<\/em> article about a couple<\/a> of weeks ago did a good job of bringing to light some of the facts that show that these allegations are false,\u201d Adams says. \u201cThere\u2019s more evidence to come and we\u2019ll get that out as it becomes available.\u201d<\/p>\n

56-year-old Adams, who recently moved back to Portland after a stint in Washington, D.C., says he now plans to work on repairing his reputation in the city he loves.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe allegation that was core to those claims, the accuser had to backtrack,\u201d he says. \u201cSo, that\u2019s just part of the evidence. There\u2019ll be more evidence coming up. And it\u2019s an opportunity, coming back to Portland, to present my side of the story.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked whether he may run for office again, he said he hasn\u2019t \u201ceven thought about it\u201d and is instead focused on being a good citizen and neighbor.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t be complacent, and we\u2019ve got to, all of us, pitch in wherever we can,\u201d he says. \u201cWhether that\u2019s being in the highest elected office in the city or scrubbing graffiti in your neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n
