ICELAND<\/strong>. Bishop of Iceland apologizes to gay and lesbian community<\/a>: \u2018Bishop of Iceland Agnes M. Sigur\u00f0ard\u00f3ttir has apologised to the gay<\/a> and lesbian<\/a> community of Iceland on behalf of the country\u2019s National Church. The apology was made during an\u00a0interview<\/a>\u00a0on talk show\u00a0Kastlj\u00f3s<\/em>\u00a0yesterday evening. Reporter Einar \u00deorsteinsson asked Agnes about the position the previous Bishop, Karl Sigurbj\u00f6rnsson, took on same sex<\/a> marriage. In 2016, under Karl\u2019s leadership, the National Church strongly protested a bill introduced to protect the rights of homosexual people. The bill proposed granting pastors within the National Church the authority to wed same sex<\/a> couples<\/a>. In an\u00a0interview<\/a>\u00a0taken at that time, Karl stated \u201cI think we owe it to [the institution of] marriage to not toss it on the garbage heap without considering what we\u2019re doing.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n
