Delta Air Lines Again Caught Removing Gay Content from In-Flight Films, This Time \u2018Rocketman\u2019 and \u2018Booksmart\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n

Back in 2016, Delta Air Lines came under fire for screening a version of the Oscar-nominated film\u00a0<\/a>Carol<\/a><\/em>\u00a0for passengers in its in-flight entertainment program which deleted\u00a0kisses between Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett<\/a>. Now, Delta has done it again with the recent Elton John biopic Rocketman<\/em> and the Olivia Wilde-directed film Booksmart<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Entertainment Weekly\u2019s digital director Shana Krochmal was one of the passengers who pointed out the Rocketman<\/em> censorship. The film left in an assault between John Reid and Elton but removed all intimacy between them.<\/p>\n

Wrote Krochmal: \u201cOn @Delta<\/a> today discovered that #Rocketman is stripped of almost every gay<\/a> reference or scene that @eltonofficial<\/a> fought to keep in the film\u2019s mainstream release, including a simple chaste kiss. This is good context but it\u2019s still frustrating. As @yayponies<\/a> pointed out in a very justified rant, what does it say that the edit left in a scene of John Reid assaulting Elton but removed any evidence of intimacy between them or for that matter Elton and any man<\/a>? What is that saying is OK?\u201d<\/p>\n

But Watch \u2018Booksmart\u2019 on a Delta Air Lines flight, and the R-rated high school comedy will skip right through that scene.\u00a0Reportedly, the in-flight cut also passes over<\/a>\u00a0the words \u2018vagina\u2019 and \u2018genitals,\u2019 an exchange about a lesbian<\/a> sex<\/a> act, talk of a urinary tract infection, and a bit in which Amy and her friend watch porn in the back of a ride-share.\u2019<\/p>\n

Variety<\/em> reports<\/a>: \u201cA spokesperson for Delta told\u00a0Variety<\/em>\u00a0that the airline works with studios and a third-party editing company, which provides its own edit of the movie, as well as the unedited version. If anything in the unedited version of the movie does not meet Delta\u2019s guidelines, then Delta runs the third party\u2019s edit of the film, regardless of whether further aspects of the film that don\u2019t violate Delta\u2019s guidelines have also been removed. Delta declined to provide the airline\u2019s standards and guidelines for in-flight movies, and the spokesperson said he was not aware what part of the unedited version of \u2018Booksmart\u2019 did not meet Delta\u2019s guidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company released a statement: \u201cDelta\u2019s content parameters do not in any way ask for the removal of homosexual content from the film. We value diversity and inclusion as core to our culture and our mission and will review our processes to ensure edited video<\/a> content doesn\u2019t conflict with these values.\u201d<\/p>\n
