{"id":101645,"date":"2019-10-15T08:25:37","date_gmt":"2019-10-15T12:25:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/advocates-raise-awareness-for-national-latinx-aids-awareness-day\/"},"modified":"2019-10-15T08:25:37","modified_gmt":"2019-10-15T12:25:37","slug":"advocates-raise-awareness-for-national-latinx-aids-awareness-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/advocates-raise-awareness-for-national-latinx-aids-awareness-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Advocates Raise Awareness for National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Advocates Raise Awareness for National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day<\/b><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets2.hrc.org\/images\/made\/images\/remote\/https_assets2.hrc.org\/files\/images\/blog\/HIVAIDS-Ribbon-1600x900_640_360.png\"><\/p>\n<p>To Omar Martinez, National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day is about uplifting the voices of Latinx activists and ensuring that Latinx people living with HIV and AIDS receive the best care possible moving forward while remembering Latinx people who died of HIV and AIDS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way to move forward is to really tackle and address the structural issues,\u201d Martinez, an assistant professor at Temple University\u2019s School of Social Work, told HRC. \u201c[This] includes discrimination, the anti-immigration rhetoric, structural racism, cultural imperalism and access and barriers to health care\u2026 I would argue that these are the major challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>October 15 marks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiv.gov\/events\/awareness-days\/latino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day<\/a> \u2014 a day to raise awareness about how HIV and AIDS impact the Latinx community, educate the public on preventative measures and more. NLAAD\u2019s theme this year is \u201cliving with HIV or not&#8230; we&#8217;re fighting this together,\u201d focusing on ending the stigma around the disease and helping to address HIV in the Latinx community.<\/p>\n<p>This is immensely important because HIV stigma remains one of the biggest challenges for advocates who are fighting to end it.<\/p>\n<p>As Martinez notes, there\u2019s an intersectional societal stigma that impacts Latinx people living with HIV. Racism, discrimination, criminalization of HIV transmission in several states and the lack of access to care \u2014 especially for undocumented people \u2014 are all issues Latinx activists are working to address.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe, as a community, must continue fighting these larger structures,\u201d Martinez said.<\/p>\n<p>According<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/features\/latinoaidsawareness\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>, in the Latinx community, HIV and AIDS predominantly affects <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=R2Xc&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">men<\/a> who are <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=R2Xc&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">gay<\/a>, <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/couples\/?mp_code=akftr\">bisexual<\/a> or who have <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/couples\/?mp_code=akftr\">sex<\/a> with other <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=R2Xc&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">men<\/a>. Between 2011 to 2015, HIV diagnoses increased 13% among Latinx <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=R2Xc&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">gay<\/a> and <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/couples\/?mp_code=akftr\">bisexual<\/a> <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=R2Xc&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">men<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Society still has a long way to go. Martinez hopes Latinx people living with HIV know that things are improving with research and social justice activism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all in this together,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><em>HRC is committed to working with our allies, partners, members and supporters to end the HIV and AIDS epidemic and the stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS.
